Viennese Operetta Revue in the historic Goethe Theater
The Goethe Theater Bad Lauchstädt is one of the oldest surviving theater buildings in Germany. Built in 1802 under Goethe's direction, the house has preserved its original neoclassical stage machinery and is considered an architectural jewel of the early 19th century. In this setting — plush, stucco, gilded boxes — the Viennese Operetta Revue „Magic of Operetta“ performs every summer.
The production sees itself as a musical and scenic declaration of love to Viennese Operetta. The Gala Symphony Orchestra Prague performs the genre's most famous pieces under changing conductors — from Johann Strauss’ Wiener Blut to Lehár's Lustige Witwe to Kálmán's Csárdásfürstin. International soloists perform, complemented by the Johann Strauss Ballet. The evening alternates between arias, duets, waltzes, polkas, and marches — an elegant best-of show that takes the audience on a journey through the world of operetta.
Bad Lauchstädt in the Saalekreis region was a fashionable spa town in the 18th and early 19th centuries. Goethe established a summer residence for the Weimar Court Theater here — the theater was designed accordingly. Today, the building stands at the center of a preserved baroque spa park, inviting strolls between spring pavilions and spa facilities during intermission. The state of Saxony-Anhalt has carefully restored the ensemble with heritage conservation in mind; it is one of the most beautiful theater venues in Germany.
The „Magic of Operetta“ is not an avant-garde evening, but a deliberately classic format. Those who love operetta — or simply want to experience a summer evening in one of Saxony-Anhalt's most beautiful historic theaters — will find a highly professional production in an incomparable setting. If the weather is good, a walk through the spa park before the concert is worthwhile, followed by a glass of wine in the restaurant of the spa facilities.
The „Magic of Operetta“ 2026 takes place on Saturday, August 15, 2026, at 5:00 PM in the historic Goethe Theater Bad Lauchstädt. The organizer is the event agency Klaus Wünsch in cooperation with the Historic Spa Facilities and the Goethe Theater.
Detailed program sequence and cast will be announced by the event agency in advance. The exact order of works and solo performances varies from performance to performance.
