6th Edition — Knights' Tournament and Medieval Market in the Castle Park
Schloss Schkopau is located in the southern Saale region, between Halle and Merseburg in Saalekreis. The complex is a former moated castle with Renaissance extensions, whose castle park has for years become the stage for one of the most vibrant medieval festivals in the region. The organizers are Sonnenritter e.V., an experienced medieval group from Central Germany, who run the event with an emphasis on authenticity.
At the center are the knights' tournaments by the Sonnenritter — several performances per day with riders, horses, lances, and swords. Around 40 traders and craftspeople present their goods at the medieval market: swords, leather, jewelry, candles, fabrics, woodwork. Live demonstrations show blacksmithing, leatherwork, basket weaving, and pottery. The staging is meticulous — no bratwurst stands in the style of a funfair, but a focus on historical credibility.
What distinguishes the Schkopau medieval festival from comparable events is its family-friendly atmosphere. A hand-operated Ferris wheel and a historical carousel for children, donkey rides, face painting, puppet theater — all within a historically charming setting. Family ticket: only the first child pays, all subsequent children are free. This detailed policy makes the festival a popular destination for parents from Halle, Merseburg, and Leipzig.
Schkopau is also a place with an unusual industrial history: the Buna works (now Dow Chemical) were among the largest chemical sites in Central Germany during GDR times. The tension between medieval castle heritage and industrial modernity makes the area appealing. Visitors to the medieval festival can combine their day with a visit to the industrial culture sites around Merseburg or a walk along the Saale river.
Two days of festivities with a lively medieval reenactment in the castle park. Several knights' tournaments per day, continuous market activity with craft demonstrations, and a family and children's program. Performances by musicians like Donner & Doria, theater groups like Compania Chaotica, and performers like Don Oswaldo.
