Four days of Franconian wine festival in one of Europe's most beautiful rococo gardens
The Wine Festival in the Rococo Garden is one of the most atmospheric wine festivals in Franconia. The venue is the Fasanenallee in the Hofgarten of Veitshöchheim – one of Europe's most famous rococo gardens, designed in the 18th century as the summer residence of the Würzburg Prince-Bishops. Over 200 sandstone sculptures from the workshops of Balthasar Neumann and Ferdinand Tietz line the paths, along with pavilions, water basins, hedge cabinets, and arbors. No wine tastes better than when drunk amidst figures of gods and baroque water features.
The event is organized by four local clubs from Veitshöchheim together with the municipality. Each club manages its own wine stands, and the specialties come directly from the neighboring Franconian wine region. This mix – club service, municipal coordination, regional winemakers – makes the festival a cornerstone of community life, not just a pure tourism event.
The wine selection focuses on Franconian vineyards around Würzburg: Silvaner, Müller-Thurgau, Bacchus, Riesling, and Spätburgunder. Silvaner has its geographical home in Franconia – the region is considered the cradle of this grape variety in Germany. In addition, there are the typical Bocksbeutel bottles, which are part of Franconian wine culture.
In addition to wine, there are Flammkuchen (tarte flambée), regional platters, Schäufele (pork shoulder), roasted specialties, and desserts. The gastronomic offerings are based on the rural cuisine of Franconia and are provided by the clubs themselves.
Veitshöchheim is located in the district of Würzburg in the Lower Franconia region of the state of Bavaria, on the right bank of the Main river, a few kilometers downstream from Würzburg. The Hofgarten is the municipality's tourist flagship; the wine festival combines this historical appeal with lived village culture. After the regular garden opening hours, access during the festival days is possible via the Fasanentor (Pheasant Gate) at the corner of Obere Maingasse / Würzburger Straße.
