Summery wine village in the birthplace of Theodor Heuss — Württemberg's largest wine-growing community and red wine stronghold
Brackenheim is Württemberg's largest wine-growing community by vineyard area — and at the same time the state's undisputed red wine capital. The vineyards around Brackenheim (Heilbronner Stiftsberg, Brackenheimer Schloßberg, Botenheimer Ranzenberg) have produced Trollinger, Lemberger, Schwarzriesling, and Samtrot for centuries — the typical Württemberg red wine grape varieties. The town is famous for its dense network of vintners: family wineries, wine cooperatives, and large estates work side by side.
The Brackenheim Wine Village takes place on a June weekend on the market square and in the adjacent alleys of the town center. Local vintners and producers exhibit their wines in wooden huts and pavilions, combined with culinary specialties from the region: Swabian Maultaschen, lentil soup with Saitenwurst, Vesper platters with Brackenheim smoked sausage and Gaißburger Marsch. You stroll between the stands, taste, buy by the bottle — the classic South German wine festival format with a distinct Brackenheim character: not too touristy, not too folkloric, but authentically vintner-led.
Brackenheim is the birthplace of Theodor Heuss (1884–1963), the first Federal President of the Federal Republic of Germany. His birthplace on Bahnhofstraße is now the Theodor Heuss Museum — one of the most important museums on the history of early German democracy. Brackenheim proudly bears its status as the "Theodor Heuss Town" and integrates it into many cultural events. The Wine Village traditionally offers Heuss-themed guided tours.
Brackenheim has just under 16,000 inhabitants and is located in the Zabergäu, the western part of the Heilbronn district. The region — gently rolling hills with vineyards, orchards, and forests — is one of the most beautiful low mountain landscapes in Baden-Württemberg. The neighboring city of Heilbronn (130,000 inhabitants) is 15 km to the east, Stuttgart is 50 km to the south.
The city of Brackenheim is organizing the 2026 Wine Village in its established format: central huts of local vintners on the market square, supplemented by club stands with regional cuisine, a live music stage, and a children's area. The list of vintners includes the Brackenheim Wine Cooperative, Weingut Sankt Annagarten, Weingut Heid, and several other family businesses.
The format is clearly designed around the wine: you taste your way through the Württemberg red wine palette, from young Trollinger to full-bodied Lemberger to elegant Samtrot. Swabian cuisine provides the culinary accompaniment — Maultaschen, lentil soup, Gaißburger Marsch, Brackenheim smoked sausage.
Free admission. Glasses of wine usually €3–5, bottle purchases directly at the stand, food €7–12 (Maultaschen, Vesper platters, Gaißburger Marsch). Payment via voucher system or directly.
By train to Heilbronn Hauptbahnhof, then take the Zabergäu-Express (BR 622) directly to Brackenheim (30 min). By car via the A 81 (Würzburg–Stuttgart), exit Brackenheim-Güglingen.
Saturday, June 20: from 3:00 p.m. Sunday, June 21: from 11:00 a.m. (Monday, June 22: possibly winding-down program — see local announcement.)
Free admission. Consumption at the vintner and club stands via voucher system or direct payment.
