Summer Evening at the Alte Kelter
The Haberschlacht Neighbourhood Festival is one of those small festivals that show how village culture works in Baden-Württemberg. The venue is the Alte Kelter Haberschlacht at Eduard-Wörner-Straße 1 – the historic press house where the district's grapes were pressed for generations and which now serves as an association and event venue. On a Thursday evening at the end of August, the town of Brackenheim invites you to a compact, four- to five-hour summer festival with the participation of local associations.
Well-Catered Sociability
The concept is classically Württemberg: catering by local associations – sports club, Liederkranz choir, fire brigade, music club, country women – each running their own stand with their own specialties and their own atmosphere. The programme includes Swabian classics (Maultaschen, ham, sausages), wine from the Zabergäu, beer, as well as coffee and cake. Musical accompaniment is provided by local bands or a small live band. The evening has a clear start (6:30 PM) and usually ends around midnight – a manageable, perfectly dosed event for families and friends.
Württemberg Wine Culture in a Word: Zabergäu
Haberschlacht is one of nine districts of the town of Brackenheim and is located in the heart of the Zabergäu – that small hilly landscape between Stromberg and Heuchelberg in the Heilbronn district. The Zabergäu is considered one of Württemberg's oldest wine-growing regions, with over 1,200 years of wine-growing tradition. Brackenheim itself bears the nickname "Red Wine Capital of Württemberg" and, with over 700 hectares of vineyards, is the largest red wine community in Baden-Württemberg. The neighbourhood festival in Haberschlacht is a perfect opportunity to get an impression of this wine culture in a small, intimate setting – right at the place of pressing.
Brackenheim and the Zabergäu
Brackenheim is located in the Heilbronn district in Baden-Württemberg, about 20 km west of Heilbronn. The town with its 16,000 inhabitants in nine districts is not only the red wine capital but also the birthplace of Theodor Heuss, the first Federal President of Germany. His birthplace and the Theodor Heuss memorial site are popular excursion destinations, and the Zabergäu invites you to cycle and hike through the vineyards. The Haberschlacht Neighbourhood Festival is a good reason for a weekend trip to the Zabergäu – with a stroll through Brackenheim's old town and a wine hike the following day.
