Carnival Tradition in Wiesensteig since 1846 — the highlight of the Wiesensteiger Fasnet
Wiesensteig is located at the source of the Fils river, in the district of Göppingen, nestled between the heights of the Swabian Jura. The town has just under 2,500 inhabitants and is one of the most beautiful small old towns in the region. Here, the Fasnets-Gesellschaft Wiesensteig 1846 e.V. has been preserving its carnival tradition for almost 180 years.
The Wiesensteiger Rosenmontag procession is the central carnival event in the Filstal valley. The traditional Fasnetsmarkt is set up in the town all day long — with stalls, food and drink, mulled wine, and hot beverages. In the morning, the guild master reception takes place — a traditional gathering of jester guilds from the region and friendly groups. Here, people eat, drink, and get in the mood before the procession.
As is typical in the carnival customs of the Swabian-Alemannic Fastnacht, the Rosenmontag procession starts not at 2:00 PM, but at 2:01 PM — the jester's minute. Jester guilds from the Filstal, the Swabian Jura, and friendly groups parade through the town center — with traditional costumes (Häs), hand-carved wooden masks (Larven), brass bands (Guggenmusiken), themed floats, and drummers.
After the procession, the festivities move into the jester's tent — typically set up in the festival square or town hall square. The jester's party with DJ music, carnival bands, dancing, and drinks continues here until 11:59 PM. Those who can't find a spot in the tent celebrate in the town's restaurants and on the streets.
The Fasnets-Gesellschaft Wiesensteig 1846 e.V. is one of the oldest organized jester guilds in Southern Germany. Its tradition is closely linked to the town's history — Wiesensteig was its own county in the Middle Ages with a rich monastic culture, and the Fasnet here has developed in a unique blend of Alemannic and Swabian traditions.
The Wiesensteiger Rosenmontag 2026 runs all day. The traditional Fasnetsmarkt in the town is open from morning till evening with stalls — offering goods, food and drink, mulled wine, and hot beverages. In the morning, the guild master reception takes place — the jester guilds gather, eat and drink together, and get in the mood for the procession.
At 2:01 PM, the highlight begins — the grand, colorful Rosenmontag procession. Afterwards, the festivities move into the jester's tent and the town's restaurants.
Fasnetsmarkt and street procession are free. Admission to the jester's tent for the afternoon and evening party: 4 EUR. Food and drinks at the tent and market stalls at usual festival prices.
Wiesensteig is located on the A 8 motorway (Mühlhausen or Drackenstein exit). Train: To Geislingen (Steige) or Göppingen, then bus or taxi. On Rosenmontag, travel by car is restricted — the town center is closed, parking is available outside the town center.
Fasnetsmarkt and procession are free — confetti, candies, and mulled wine are part of the custom. Admission to the jester's tent is 4 EUR per person. Catering is provided by local restaurateurs.
The procession is family-friendly — themed floats throw candies. Do not touch the costumed figures with wooden masks (Häs/Larven) — the masks are sacred and some are generations old.
