St. Andrew's Day — the traditional market date
November 30th is traditionally the day of the Apostle Andrew in the predominantly Catholic southern Germany — and in many towns of the Swabian Jura, it's the date for a pre-Christmas market. The Laichingen Andreasmarkt has its roots in the Middle Ages, when annual markets on saints' days were the most important economic hubs of the rural region. Back then, farmers and craftsmen met to buy tools, fabrics, salt, ironware, and supplies for the winter. This tradition lives on in the Laichingen Andreasmarkt to this day — with modern products today, but in the same spirit.
Program — a day full of stalls
On Monday, November 30, 2026, the main streets and squares of Laichingen's city center will be occupied by market stalls. Open from around 8 a.m. until the early evening. Assortment:
- Household goods — pans, pots, dishes, kitchen items
- Textiles — bed linen, blankets, scarves, hats, wool products from regional Jura sheep farming
- Tools — hand tools, small machines, garden
- Sweets — gingerbread, pralines, marzipan, candies
- Gift items — toys, candles, decorations, wrapping paper
- New items — changing assortments: kitchen appliances, new tool innovations, etc.
Between the stalls, you'll find food stands with bratwurst, potato pancakes (Reibekuchen), mulled wine (Glühwein), punch, and candied almonds. Local clubs — sports clubs, fire department, heritage society — serve food as a source of income for their club funds.
Meeting point for the rural population
The Andreasmarkt is more than just a shopping date — it's a social meeting point. Here, the rural population of the Jura highlands meets: farming families from the surrounding villages (Berghülen, Westerheim, Heroldstatt, Merklingen, Suppingen), craftsmen, commuters who live in Laichingen and work in Ulm. The market stalls become places for conversation — about the weather, politics, family stories, school news. This social dimension makes the Andreasmarkt a unique piece of Jura identity.
Laichingen — the Jura town of weavers
With just under 12,000 inhabitants, Laichingen is located on the Swabian Jura plateau, in the Alb-Donau district (AGS 08425). The town was historically a center of home weaving — linen was produced here on hundreds of looms well into the 19th century, which was exported worldwide. The Laichingen Cave Swimming Pool (second deepest water shaft in Germany) and the Karst Cave World around the town are further attractions. Its location at around 750 meters altitude often makes Laichingen the first snow town in southern Germany — so possibly with snowfall at the Andreasmarkt 2026.
