Open-air exhibition by Tobias Rehberger in Baden-Baden's Kurpark
Since Baden-Baden's UNESCO recognition as a "Great Spa Town of Europe" (World Heritage since 2021), the spa town sees itself more than ever as a cultural hub. The "Kunst findet Stadt" series has been showcasing renowned contemporary artists in the Kurpark for several years — in 2026, Tobias Rehberger is the guest.
Tobias Rehberger (born 1966 in Esslingen am Neckar) is one of the most sought-after German contemporary artists internationally. Trained at the Städelschule Frankfurt under Thomas Bayrle, he now teaches there himself as a professor. In 2009, he received the Golden Lion at the Venice Biennale for his contribution "What You Love Will Destroy You." He is known for his café-bar installation for the Venice Biennale, his Dazzle-painted ships, and his geometric, colorful visual language that playfully questions perception and space.
The specific works and their locations will be conceived by Rehberger especially for Baden-Baden. Based on experience, the artist plays with existing architectures — fountains, pavilions, paths, Trinkhalle, Kurhaus — and complements them with sculptures, colorfully designed surfaces, light installations, and site-specific interventions. Visitors will discover the works during a stroll through the park, supported by an accompanying brochure and an audio guide.
From July 18 to September 6, 2026 — almost seven weeks — the works will be freely accessible. The combination of the World Heritage Park, international contemporary art, and Mediterranean summer atmosphere makes "Kunst findet Stadt" one of the most unusual art formats in Baden-Württemberg.
The spa town in the Black Forest foothills, with a population of around 56,000, looks back on 2,000 years of spa culture. The historic thermal baths, the casino, the Festspielhaus (now one of Germany's largest opera and concert halls), and the Kurpark with its Lichtentaler Allee make Baden-Baden one of Europe's best-known cultural destinations. "Kunst findet Stadt" is part of the extensive summer program of Baden-Baden Events GmbH.
From July 18 to September 6, 2026 — seven weeks of summer — Frankfurt artist Tobias Rehberger will fill Baden-Baden's Kurpark with site-specific installations. Rehberger is among the most famous German contemporary artists; his work is characterized by a colorful geometric visual language and a playful questioning of perception and space.
The works are created especially for the Kurpark and enter into dialogue with its historic architectures — Trinkhalle, Kurhaus, pavilions, and the path network of the Lichtentaler Allee. Visitors discover them during a stroll, accompanied by a brochure and an audio guide.
Free admission to the entire exhibition in the public Kurpark. Guided tours may be subject to a fee via the Tourist Information; audio guide app available for free download.
Baden-Baden is accessible via the A 5 motorway (Baden-Baden exit) and the B 500. By train: Baden-Baden station (ICE), from there bus line 201 or approx. 25 min. walk via Lichtentaler Allee to the Kurpark. Parking garages are located directly at the Kurhaus and the Festspielhaus.
Saturday, July 18, to Sunday, September 6, 2026 — the Kurpark is freely accessible during the day. The installations are permanently placed and can be visited at any time during this period. Some light installations are most effective at dusk.
Free admission to the entire exhibition. Accompanying program (guided tours, artist talk) may require separate registration via the Baden-Baden Tourist Information.
