Chamber music festival with classical and jazz in special venues around the Donnersberg from June to August
The Donnersbergiade is a chamber music festival that takes place in special venues around the Donnersberg in Nordpfalz. Over several months – from June to August – the festival presents top-class concerts with classical music and jazz in locations such as Kloster Rosenthal, the historic Jagdhaus Dannenfels, or other culturally historic venues in the region.
In 2026, the festival runs from Saturday, June 13th to Sunday, August 23rd. Highlights include an open-air concert by the Signum Saxophon Quartet on June 13th, the Dieter Ilg Trio with Ravel interpretations on August 8th, the duo “Face to Face” with Daniel Heide and Rainer Böhm on August 15th, and violinist Nicole Ostmann with Bach on August 23rd. The festival is supported by Kultursommer Rheinland-Pfalz.
At 687 meters, the Donnersberg is the highest mountain in the Palatinate and a scenic and cultural landmark of Nordpfalz. Villages, abbeys, castles, and historic venues are located around the mountain, serving as concert locations for the Donnersbergiade. The combination of experiencing nature, culturally historic spaces, and top-class music is the festival's hallmark.
The Donnersbergiade's program consciously bridges classical music and jazz. Both genres have their own tradition in chamber music, both benefit from the intimate setting of small venues, and the mix creates a multi-layered festival experience. The opening concert with the Signum Saxophon Quartet at Kloster Rosenthal unites both worlds in an open-air ambiance.
The Dieter Ilg Trio interprets works by Maurice Ravel at Jagdhaus Dannenfels on August 8th – jazz meets French Impressionism. “Face to Face” brings together pianist Daniel Heide and composer/pianist Rainer Böhm on August 15th, a piano duo bridging classical and jazz. The finale on August 23rd features violinist Nicole Ostmann with works by Johann Sebastian Bach – a classically pure conclusion.
The Donnersbergiade is supported by Kultursommer Rheinland-Pfalz, an initiative by the state to support summer cultural events. This funding makes it possible to engage top-class artists and maintain the festival at an artistically demanding level. The Donnersbergiade is thus part of the rich Kultursommer program in Rhineland-Palatinate.
The 2026 Donnersbergiade runs from Saturday, June 13th to Sunday, August 23rd.
