Asparagus festival at Spargelhof Niemann in Wichtenbeck with asparagus meals, competition, live music, and hay bale slide
Wichtenbeck asparagus is a regional specialty of the Lüneburg Heath with its own cultivation tradition. Asparagus of special quality thrives on the sandy, well-aerated heath soils around Wichtenbeck (part of the Eimke municipality in the Suderburg collective municipality). Spargelhof Niemann is the main producer — and the annual Asparagus Festival is the opportunity to experience the specialty directly at the place of production.
After the Niemann family gave up the farm, Oliver Brink took over asparagus cultivation and continues the tradition under the established name. This continuity is important for the region — Wichtenbeck asparagus remains available, the farm stays alive, and the annual festival remains on the event calendar. A beautiful story of generational change and commitment to regional agriculture.
On the festival day, the asparagus meal is the centerpiece. Classic dishes are offered: asparagus with hollandaise sauce, with melted butter, with ham, with schnitzel, as soup, or as a salad. Fresh asparagus, harvested in the morning, served at noon — it doesn't get any more direct than this. Those who want to take asparagus home after the meal can shop at the farm shop.
A traditional highlight is the asparagus peeling competition. Participants compete against each other, trying to peel as many asparagus spears as possible neatly within a given time. The winners are honored, the audience applauds — a cheerful competition that makes the agricultural background of the festival tangible.
Ralf Ziegenbein provides the musical accompaniment with live music — mostly acoustic classics, Schlager, and mood music that are well-suited for eating asparagus outdoors. The Treckerfreunde Wriedel present historical tractors — a highlight for agriculture enthusiasts and children. Jonglage Dreilinger offers show acts with professional juggling and acrobatics.
A large hay bale slide is available for the youngest festival visitors. A straw slide is set up on the farm, delighting children all day long. A simple but effective attraction that fits the agricultural character of the festival.
The Wichtenbeck Asparagus Festival is a direct encounter with agriculture. Visitors see the fields, get to know the producer, eat freshly harvested vegetables, and take home insights into regional production. Admission is free — the gesture of a farm welcoming its customers.
