Advent Magic in the Pilgrimage Town of Werl
Werl, in the southern Soest district, bears the epithet Pilgrimage Town — the Basilica of the Black Madonna has attracted pilgrims since the 17th century. This sacred atmosphere also shapes the town during Advent: The Werl Christmas Market will take place in 2026 against this festive backdrop, from Friday, December 4 to Sunday, December 13, 2026 — covering the first two Advent weekends.
Market Square and Walburgis Square — The Two Stages
The Werl Christmas Market is spread across two central squares in the city center:
- The historic Market Square around the Town Hall and within sight of the Basilica
- Walburgis Square directly next to St. Walburga's Church
Both squares are connected by the pedestrian zone of Werl's city center, allowing visitors to experience the entire market in a circular route. The stalls are adorned with fir branches, fairy lights, and small Christmas decorations — a typical scene of Advent spirit in the Westphalian province.
Stalls with Regional Charm
The market's offerings are classic and rural Westphalian:
- Mulled wine in several variations — classic red mulled wine, white mulled wine, non-alcoholic children's punch
- Bratwurst and Currywurst — thick Westphalian style, with mustard or ketchup
- Fried dough pastries: Reibekuchen (potato pancakes), Schmalzkuchen (fried dough balls), Quarkbällchen (quark doughnuts)
- Regional Crafts: Pottery, wood, felt, cards, jewelry
- Advent Decorations: Wreaths, stars, Christmas trees, nativity figures
- Sweets: Candied almonds, gingerbread, stollen, cookies
Sunday Shopping on December 6
A highlight in Werl's Advent calendar is the Sunday shopping event on December 6, 2026 (second Advent Sunday). On this day, all of Werl's retailers — fashion, shoes, books, household goods, toys — open their doors, complementing the Christmas market program with a classic Advent shopping experience. The combination of the market and Sunday shopping makes Werl's market a popular day-trip destination for the southern Soest district and the adjacent Sauerland region.
Pilgrimage Basilica as a Backdrop
The Basilica of St. Mary is Werl's largest building by far and is particularly festively decorated during Advent — candles, adorned altars, and festive organ music accompany the pilgrims. Visitors to the Christmas market should take time to visit the Basilica — a particularly contemplative break from the Advent hustle and bustle.
Werl — Pilgrimage Town in Southern Westphalia
Werl is a town of nearly 30,000 inhabitants in the Soest district, on the edge of the North German Plain towards the Sauerland. Known for the Pilgrimage to Mary (Black Madonna), salt pans (Werl salt has a long tradition), and a well-preserved old town. The Christmas market fits into this sacred-historical atmosphere, making Werl a special destination in Advent.
South Westphalia — Land of Advent Markets
In southern North Rhine-Westphalia, transitioning into the Sauerland, the South Westphalia region is known for its many small, distinctive Advent markets. Werl is among the most traditional — not a mass event in a big city, but an authentic Westphalian format with the pilgrimage basilica as a spiritual anchor.
