About Wendelsteiner Kärwa

Every year at the end of June, the Wendelsteiner Kirchweih transforms the old town of the market community in Middle Franconia into a huge folk festival (Volksfest). From June 26 to 29, 2026, rides, market stalls, and festival tents will line the main street and Röthenbacher Straße through the center, while the notorious Kärwa All Stars Wendelstein orchestrate the convivial program. Highlights: Raising of the Kärwabaum (Maypole) on Friday, parade through the entire town on Sunday at 1 PM, ecumenical opening service, and joint festival evening with the mayor's beer tapping ceremony.

One of the Largest Folk Festivals in the Roth District

The Wendelsteiner Kirchweih is one of the largest and most popular parish festivals in Middle Franconia – even though Wendelstein, with just under 16,000 inhabitants, is a rather small market community in the southern Roth district. What makes the Wendelsteiner Kärwa special: It transforms the entire old town center into a Volksfest. Rides, food stalls, beer tents, and club stands line Hauptstraße, Röthenbacher Straße, and the Plärrer – the atmosphere is reminiscent of the great Franconian folk festivals, just on a smaller scale.

The Kärwa All Stars as Volunteer Organizers

The Kärwa All Stars Wendelstein are the volunteer organizing team that puts on the Kärwa year after year. A colorful group of young men and women from Wendelstein who, with great commitment, manage the festival weekend. They are responsible for erecting the Kärwabaum on Friday and for the parade on Sunday afternoon – the emblematic highlight of every Wendelsteiner Kärwa.

Sunday, 1 PM — The Parade

The parade on Sunday at 1 PM is a colorful procession through the main street: Kärwa All Stars in traditional costume, friendly clubs, music bands, historical floats, the Wendelstein traditional costume group, and friendly fire departments. The route leads from the festival grounds through the old town to the Plärrer – thousands of locals and visitors line the way.

Four Festival Days in Wendelstein's Old Town

The festival program traditionally runs for four days: Friday opening with ecumenical service and parade to the Plärrer, raising of the Kärwabaum, mayor's beer tapping. Saturday all-day festival operation with live music in the festival tent. Sunday festival service at 9 AM, then parade at 1 PM, large festival evening in the evening. Monday classic Kärwamontag with Frühschoppen (morning pint), club and senior program.

Wendelstein and the Schwarzachtal Valley

Wendelstein lies between Nuremberg to the north and Roth to the south, idyllically situated in the Schwarzachtal valley. The market community with its medieval old town, the Wendelsteiner Tor, and the historic town hall offers the perfect backdrop for a traditional Kärwa. Anyone who wants to experience the feeling of a large Franconian Kirchweih in a manageable market community will find it here.

Wendelsteiner Kärwa — edition 2026

The Wendelsteiner Kirchweih 2026 runs from Friday, June 26, to Monday, June 29. The Kärwa All Stars Wendelstein will once again transform the old town along Hauptstraße and Röthenbacher Straße into a large folk festival. Highlights: ecumenical opening service and parade to the Plärrer on Friday, raising of the Kärwabaum, mayor's beer tapping, grand parade by the Kärwa All Stars on Sunday at 1 PM, classic Kärwamontag with Frühschoppen.

The Wendelsteiner Kirchweih 2026 follows the proven four-day choreography. On Friday, June 26, the festival begins at 4 PM with an ecumenical service, followed by a festive parade to the Plärrer, where the Kärwa All Stars will erect the Kärwabaum. Mayor Werner Langhans (or his successor) will tap the first beer keg.

On Saturday, June 27, the all-day festival operation with rides, market stalls, and live music in the festival tent will take place. Sunday, June 28, begins at 9 AM with the festival service; at 1 PM, the grand parade of the Kärwa All Stars will form through Wendelstein's old town – the emblematic highlight with traditional costume groups, music bands, and friendly clubs. In the evening, a grand festival celebration in the beer tent. Kärwamontag brings Frühschoppen, club evening, and a more relaxed end to the festival.
