A weekend for the whole town at the Medienschiff
The Ortskernfest Weiterstadt has been the convivial highlight of early summer in the municipality between Darmstadt and Griesheim for years. The organiser is the Sportgemeinde 1886 e.V. Weiterstadt – one of the most traditional clubs in the town, which conceives the festival as an open event for the entire community. It's not about headliners and entrance tickets, but about what makes a classic town festival: meeting neighbours, eating together, listening to music, staying up late.
The venue is the market square at the Medienschiff, that striking new building in the centre of Weiterstadt, which combines the library, media centre, and market square under one roof. Since its completion, the Medienschiff has become the architectural point of identification for the town, and the square in front of it is increasingly taking on the function of a real town centre – the Ortskernfest is the annual proof that the concept works.
Weiterstadt, with its approximately 27,000 inhabitants, is located directly on the A5 motorway between Frankfurt and Darmstadt. The town is primarily known for its correctional facility and for the open-air film festival in the Kuba, one of Germany's most traditional independent film festivals. The Ortskernfest represents the other side of the town: the numerous clubs that shape social life, and a self-image defined not by major events, but by vibrant neighbourhood life.
The start on Friday from 5 PM is in the classic after-work town festival style: stalls open, the first sausages land on the grill, the live band turns up the sound. The open programme structure until 2 AM is unusual for a municipal town festival – it reflects a conscious decision by the Sportgemeinde: whoever wants to celebrate should celebrate, without the plug being pulled at 11 PM.
Saturday starts at 2 PM, thus at the classic family time. In the afternoon, generations meet on the square, in the evening the younger audience takes over, and Saturday also runs until 2 AM. Catering is provided by the Sportgemeinde with its volunteer helpers – a model that is widespread in South Hesse and secures an important part of the clubs' annual budget.
The 2026 edition sticks to the proven two-day format and extends the festival deep into the night each day. Programmatically, the Ortskernfest focuses on what works: regional live acts, club catering, low barriers to entry. An open-stage, food trucks, and beer stands are grouped around the market square at the Medienschiff. The exact band list for 2026 will be announced shortly before the festival on the websites of the City of Weiterstadt and Sportgemeinde 1886.
Note: The official programme booklet with band names, artists, and time slots is usually published a few weeks before the festival on the website of the City of Weiterstadt and Sportgemeinde 1886 e.V.

If you're coming with the family: Saturday afternoon from 2 PM is the quieter time. If you want to celebrate: Friday evening from 10 PM the square fills up, the atmosphere heats up. Both festival days officially end at 2 AM.
