Traditional spring Volksfest on Karolinenplatz and Friedensplatz in the heart of Darmstadt
The Darmstadt Spring Fair is one of the two major Volksfeste of the year in Darmstadt—alongside the Autumn Fair. For over ten days, Karolinenplatz and Friedensplatz in the heart of the City of Science's downtown area transform into a lively festival ground with rides, stalls, food, and drinks. Its central location between the castle, Mathildenhöhe, and the main train station attracts families from across the entire southern Hesse region.
The organizers—the City of Darmstadt and the local fairground association—are structuring the 2026 fair with targeted special days to keep the Volksfest appealing to specific audience groups:
Classics of the fair program include: bumper cars, Breakdancer, the Ferris wheel, children's carousels, and several large rides. In addition, there are market stalls selling household goods, leather goods, and a variety of food stalls—from classic doughnuts to bratwurst, as well as vegetarian and international snacks. A beer tent and smaller stalls complement the offerings.
On the first fair weekend (April 25–26, 2026), the "Darmstadt Mobil" event, a showcase for vehicles and electromobility, will run concurrently. This combines the classic Volksfest with a modern mobility theme. On Sunday, April 26th, the city center shops will also be open (Sunday shopping).
The opening ceremony will take place on Friday, April 24th, 2026, at 6:00 PM, led by Lord Mayor Hanno Benz and Silke Coutandin-Hausmann, chairwoman of the fairground association. This will include the traditional tapping of the first beer keg, a welcome address to visitors, and the official opening of the rides.
Ten days of Volksfest with a packed program of special days. The City of Science and the fairground association are structuring the program specifically for different target groups—families, students, and nostalgia enthusiasts.
Entry to the festival grounds is completely free. Rides cost €2–€8 per ride. Breakfast in the Ferris Wheel is a special paid event (tickets via darmstadt-tourismus.de). Family Day and Childhood Heroes Day offer reduced ride prices.
Sunday to Thursday 12:00 PM–10:00 PM, Friday and Saturday 12:00 PM–11:00 PM. Sunday, May 3rd, until 9:00 PM (last day of the festival).
Entry to the festival grounds is free. Rides and food/drink are subject to charges. Family Day and Childhood Heroes Day offer reduced prices.
By train: Darmstadt Main Station, then take tram 3/5 or a bus to Karolinenplatz. By car: Use city center parking garages (City-Carrée, Schlossgarage). Expect significant parking scarcity during the fair—public transport is strongly recommended.
