Premiere in Essen's West End — Wineries, Stage, and Family Programme
Holsterhausen, a predominantly middle-class district in western Essen with around 35,000 inhabitants, will get its own wine festival in 2026. The venue is the forecourt of St. Mariä-Empfängnis Church on Gemarkenstraße — a central axis of the neighbourhood, also hosting the weekly market and the district festival. This event is a deliberate addition to Essen's major festivals like Essen Original or the Kettwig Wine Festival, aiming to give the district its own recurring summer highlight.
The focus is on wine producers from various German growing regions, who will be serving their wines on-site. Exhibitors from the Pfalz, Rheinhessen, Rheingau, and Franken regions are expected — the exact list will be announced by the organiser AGIL shortly before the event. Tasting will be done classically in wine glasses, accompanied by regional and Mediterranean food.
A live programme will run on the large stage all three days — performances by regional bands, cover sets, and acoustic acts will fill the forecourt. For families, there will be a nostalgic carousel, sweet stalls, and a kids' disco on Sunday. The concept is open and accessible, with free admission.
Behind the wine festival is the local association AGIL (AG for innovative solutions), founded in 2022. The association aims to revitalise social and cultural life in Holsterhausen — in addition to the wine festival, it organises other smaller events around Gemarkenstraße.
Holsterhausen is located between the city centre, Margarethenhöhe, and Rüttenscheid. The district has seen a noticeable upgrade in recent years — Gemarkenstraße and Holsterhauser Platz have grown into their own small restaurant mile. The wine festival fits into this development.
The first edition of the Weinfest Holsterhausen runs from Friday, June 12th, starting at 5:00 PM until Sunday, June 14th, 2026, 8:00 PM. The festival grounds extend across the forecourt of the St. Mariä-Empfängnis Catholic Parish Church on Gemarkenstraße.
Several wine stands from German growing regions are expected, alongside food trucks and food stalls. A live music programme will run on the stage all three days. For children, there will be a nostalgic carousel, face painting, and sweets, plus a kids' disco on Sunday.
Free admission to the festival grounds. Wines by the glass at standard festival prices, food at stalls also at vendor prices. Wine glasses can be taken home as souvenirs.
By underground line U 17 (Holsterhauser Platz station) or bus lines 142, 145 (Gemarkenplatz station). By car via the A 40 motorway (Essen-Holsterhausen exit). Parking around Gemarkenstraße is limited — public transport is recommended.
