Darkwave, Post-Punk, and Gothic Festival at the Weststadthalle
Since its inception, the Obsidian Echoes Festival has established itself as a fixed winter date in the calendar of the German Gothic, Post-Punk, and Darkwave scene. The venue is the Weststadthalle Essen, a multi-functional concert hall in the Holsterhausen district, which has become a central meeting point for alternative concert formats in the western Ruhr area in recent years.
The festival is deliberately genre-specific. While many festivals oscillate between styles, Obsidian Echoes clearly adheres to the Post-Punk → Darkwave → Gothic axis — with occasional excursions into Coldwave and the darker indie spectrum. This clarity is part of its appeal: those who attend know what they will hear and meet a scene that understands genre as identity.
The confirmed headliner for 2026 — Pink Turns Blue — is among the most important German Post-Punk acts of the late 1980s. Founded in Berlin in 1985, they shaped the genre with albums like If Two Worlds Kiss (1987) and Eremite (1988). Their live concerts have become a pilgrimage destination for the international Post-Punk scene in recent years.
The festival runs as a one-day indoor event from 4 PM to 11:30 PM. Several acts will perform one after another on the Weststadthalle stage, which, with approximately 600–800 seats, offers the ideal size for a concentrated festival experience. There will be an after-show program between sets; the foyer serves as a meeting point for the scene from NRW, Hamburg, Berlin, and the Netherlands.
Essen — with almost 600,000 inhabitants, one of the centers of the Ruhr area in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia — is home to one of Germany's oldest Black Scenes, closely linked to the region's industrial DNA and clubs like the Turock Halle. The Obsidian Echoes Festival leverages this connection to offer an indoor festival that is second to none in NRW.
The Obsidian Echoes Festival 2026 will run on a Saturday evening at the Weststadthalle Essen — the established indoor concert venue in western Essen. The format remains unchanged: one day, one stage, several acts from the Post-Punk, Darkwave, and Gothic spectrum.
Pink Turns Blue, founded in Berlin in 1985, is among the most important German Post-Punk bands. Their dark, melancholic songs defined the genre in the late 1980s, and since their return to live performance, they have been regular guests at major Black Scene festivals from Europe to North America.
The complete artist lineup will be announced in summer 2026. Experience shows that the lineup typically includes four to six acts from the international and national Post-Punk/Darkwave/Gothic spectrum.
Admission from 3:30 PM, program from 4:00 PM to 11:30 PM. The Weststadthalle offers a compact festival setting on two levels — stage, bar, foyer.
