Concert series in the historic cloister of the former Premonstratensian Abbey Rommersdorf
Abbey Rommersdorf was founded in 1117 as a monastery for Augustinian canons and later passed to the Premonstratensian order. It was an important spiritual and cultural center on the Middle Rhine until secularization in 1803. Today, the church, cloister, convent building, and the English Garden form an exceptionally well-preserved monastic ensemble, which is used for cultural events by the support association and the city of Neuwied.
The cloister is the heart of the monastery: a square inner walkway enclosed by Gothic arcades, combining acoustics and atmosphere. With approximately 200 seats, it offers a focused, intimate concert situation. The "Kreuzgang Konzerte" series utilizes this special feature for a deliberately curated program of folk, song, a cappella, acoustic rock, and sophisticated entertainment.
On May 4th, the Rambling Rovers will open with Irish and Celtic folk; on May 6th, Gerd Köster will follow with his program "Bla Bla & Dei dei," a tribute to Cologne singer-songwriters; on May 18th, the Simon & Garfunkel Revival Band will recreate the sound of the American folk icons; the series will conclude on May 20th with the acoustic project Simply Unplugged. All concerts begin at 8 PM.
Many visitors combine the concert evening with a stroll through the Abbey's English Garden or a small refreshment at the monastery café. The monastic ensemble itself is also accessible during the day in the summer months.
Advance ticket sales for the 2026 series have already begun. The intimate atmosphere of the cloister and the curated selection of programs attract concert-goers from across the Middle Rhine region and the Westerwald. The four evenings deliberately cover different stylistic worlds — from Celtic folk to Cologne songs — yet guarantee a focused concert mood in the historic monastic setting.
