Festival service on Pentecost Sunday in the vineyards of Worms-Pfeddersheim as a traditional event of the Protestant community
Worms-Pfeddersheim is one of Worms' largest districts with around 7,000 inhabitants, located in the southwestern part of the city. The town has a strong Protestant tradition and is also one of Worms' most important wine-growing districts – with traditional wineries such as Weingut Spohr. This dual identity – Protestant community and wine town – finds a beautiful liturgical expression in the Pentecost service.
Pentecost – the feast of the outpouring of the Holy Spirit 50 days after Easter – is one of the three major high festivals of the Christian churches. According to Christian tradition, it marks the birth of the Christian community and is traditionally associated with images of growth, fullness of life, and new beginnings. The young grapevines, which begin their vegetation phase in May, fit perfectly into this symbolism – grapes are not yet formed, but growth is visibly in full swing.
The festival service on Pentecost Sunday at 10:00 AM is celebrated in the Protestant Church Pfeddersheim. With an expanded music program – usually involving the church choir, the brass ensemble of the Posaunenchor (brass choir), and festive organ music – the liturgy becomes a special experience. The sermon typically addresses the connection between the Christian Pentecost tradition and the importance of viticulture for the district.
In the Worms festival calendar, the Pfeddersheim Pentecost service marks an important date of religious-cultural anticipation for the summer. While Worms' city center is already characterized by the Pentecost Market on Pentecost Sunday, Pfeddersheim preserves a contemplative, spiritual dimension of the festival with the service.
Like all Protestant services, this one is open to all interested parties – denominational affiliation is not a prerequisite. Those seeking a reflective start to Whit Monday or a different approach to the Pentecost season than the large folk festival in the city center will find it here.
