Knights' Spectacle in the Franco-German Garden — right on the Franco-German border
The Großer Mittelaltermarkt zu Saarbrücken is more than just another market with mead and sword fights — it takes place in the Deutsch-Französischer Garten (Franco-German Garden), a park created after World War II as a green symbol of reconciliation between Germany and France. For three days, the city celebrates a spectacle ranging from the High Middle Ages to the Late Middle Ages right on one of Europe's most significant borders.
Over thirty merchants set up their stalls: leather goods and jewellery, forged weapons and armour, medieval costumes, mead and beer specialities, incense, and medicinal herbs. Craftsmen demonstrate their skills — blacksmiths, turners, leatherworkers, felt makers, bookbinders, stonemasons. Those who wish can try their hand at archery, candle making, or coin minting.
The heart of the market beats in the historical camps: Groups from across the German-speaking world camp here in historically accurate tents, cook over open fires, and show the everyday life of the Middle Ages. Armed knights in chainmail and helmets, archers, healers, and maids live out their roles for three days. Planned combat demonstrations and falconry shows are fixed highlights of the weekend.
Music groups play medieval songs throughout the park, featuring bagpipes, hurdy-gurdies, shawms, and drums. Jugglers move from stall to stall with fire-breathing, juggling, and dance theatre. Small stages present plays, improvisations, and fairy tales from the Middle Ages. In the evening, as the sun sets over the park, the fire shows begin — a spectacle that many travel specifically to see.
The Deutsch-Französischer Garten is located on the outskirts of Saarbrücken, directly on the border with France (Spicheren). With fifty hectares, a castle, a lakeside restaurant, and a cable car, it is one of the most beautiful parks in the Saarland. It is precisely this symbolic location that makes the medieval market an experience that also attracts visitors from Lorraine and Luxembourg — the Greater Region meets here for medieval celebrations.
The state capital of the Saarland is located in the Regionalverband Saarbrücken, just under half an hour from the French border. Visitors to the medieval market can combine their weekend with a stroll through the St. Johann Old Town, a walk around the Schlossplatz (Palace Square), or an excursion to the Völklingen Ironworks.
In August 2026, the Franco-German Garden will once again transform into a medieval marketplace. Organizer Kiehn Adventure Projects has put together a packed program with merchants, costumed camps, music groups, jugglers, and fire artists. The market opens on Friday evening, runs throughout Saturday, and concludes on Sunday with a festive closing ceremony.
Free admission. Food, drinks, and goods are paid for on-site (mostly cash).
The Franco-German Garden is located about three kilometers southwest of Saarbrücken's city center. Take bus line 124 from the main train station or walk from Saarbrücken-Stadtmitte station. By car, take the A 620 (Saarbrücken–Saarlouis) or A 6 (Mannheim–Saarbrücken) motorways; paid parking is available at the park entrance.
Free admission. You only pay for what you eat, drink, or buy on-site.
Friday 5 PM–10 PM, Saturday 10 AM–10 PM, Sunday 10 AM–6 PM.
Feel free to come in medieval costume — many visitors do, and it adds to the atmosphere. If you're coming with children, don't arrive too late: the highlights for the little ones (archery, blacksmithing) are in the morning and afternoon. The park also offers boat rentals, a playground, and a lakeside restaurant.
