Traditional Schützenfest in the Horchheim Shooting House with King's Shoot
The Schützengesellschaft Koblenz-Horchheim e.V. is one of the traditional marksmen's clubs in the south of Koblenz. Its headquarters and venue is the Schützenhaus at Emser Straße 340, located above the confluence of the Moselle and Rhine rivers with a view of the highlands on the right bank. The annual Schützenfest is the highlight of the club's year, bringing together the marksmen's community with residents, guests, and friendly clubs.
The German tradition of marksmanship dates back to the Middle Ages when citizen militias were responsible for the defense of cities. Today, the Schützenwesen represents club life, sporting competitions with air rifles and small-caliber firearms, and the preservation of traditions. The King's Shoot, where the shooting monarch is determined by shooting at a wooden bird or a wooden eagle, is the ceremonial highlight of every Schützenfest.
The festival combines sporting disciplines with an entertaining supporting program: King's Shoot on the club's own shooting range, assembly of marksmen formations in uniform, a festive parade (Festzug) through the district, catering in the festival tent, live music or a party band, and dancing for guests of all generations. Friendly marksmen's clubs from Koblenz and the Westerwald are also regular guests.
Horchheim is a vibrant district of Koblenz with a strong club life. In addition to the Schützengesellschaft, the Horchheim Kirmesgesellschaft St. Maximinus, carnival clubs, sports clubs, and choirs shape the social landscape. The Schützenfest is one of many festivals throughout the year and symbolically represents the cohesion of a district community that cherishes its traditions.
The Schützengesellschaft Koblenz-Horchheim also trains young marksmen and welcomes interested members. Training and competition dates can be found on the club's website.
