Three Days of Medieval Times in the Deutsch-Französischer Garten
The Deutsch-Französischer Garten (DFG) in Saarbrücken is no ordinary park: created in 1960 as a symbol of German-French reconciliation in the Deutschmühlental valley, it is now the green lung of the Saarland state capital — and with its spectacular mix of water features, flowerbeds, groves, and play areas, it's the ideal setting for a large-scale medieval market. Organizer Kiehn Adventure Projects brings knights, jesters, artisans, and camp dwellers to the grounds for a weekend in August 2026.
Over two dozen market stalls line the paths through the park. Blacksmiths, basket weavers, leatherworkers, felt makers, and woodcarvers work live at their stalls. Goldsmiths demonstrate medieval jewelry techniques, and glass bead makers demonstrate lampworking. In addition, traders offer garments, drinking horns, dried meat, mead, and tea.
Several times a day, knights in full and plate armor engage in show fights. Archers demonstrate their skills and offer trial shots for visitors. Music groups roam the paths with hurdy-gurdies, bagpipes, and shawms, performing at set times on the stage. In the evening, the campfire beckons with quieter music and epic tales.
Several reenactment groups set up their historical camps. Here, clothing, tools, cooking areas, and the daily routines of a medieval group can be authentically observed. The camp dwellers are happy to answer questions — the market is also an open showcase for history enthusiasts.
Admission is free. The DFG is largely accessible with paths suitable for wheelchairs and strollers. For children, there is archery, daily crafts, and plenty of space to play in the park itself — the DFG features large playgrounds, a gondola lift, and the Gulliver area.
The park is located in the Deutschmühlental district, five minutes from Saarbrücken's city center. It is easily accessible by the Saarbahn S1 line, and many visitors combine their market visit with a stroll through the old town or a coffee break in the city center.
In 2026, organizer Kiehn Adventure Projects is sticking to the proven concept: around two dozen market stalls, several daily rounds of show fights and music, historical camps, and catering from the medieval kitchen. Applications for stalls, groups, and musicians are processed via the organizer's portal.
