One of Germany's most famous Christmas markets in the birthplace of the glass Christmas bauble — Glass Mile, Foundry Square, and glassworks on two Advent weekends
For decades, the Lauscha Christmas Bauble Market has been one of Germany's most renowned Christmas markets. It traditionally takes place on the first two Advent weekends in the birthplace of the glass Christmas bauble — as the very first glass Christmas bauble was blown in Lauscha in 1847. In 2026, the 34th edition will run on November 28/29 and December 5/6.
The market extends from Foundry Square along the Glass Mile through the historic town center. Glassworks, workshops, and sales stands are lined up in close proximity — many family businesses in the fourth and fifth generation. Master glassblowers work at open burners before the eyes of visitors; mouth-blown Christmas baubles, birds, glass mushrooms, and entire fairy-tale figures are created on-site. The diversity of the manufactories is characteristic: each workshop has its own designs, color palettes, and specialties.
A central point of contact is the Lauscha Glass Museum, which documents the 400-year history of Lauscha glass craftsmanship. On the opposite side of the street, the historic Elias Glassworks presents the «Hüttenweihnacht» (Foundry Christmas) — glassblowing at an open melting furnace against a festive backdrop. In the glass center's Christkindl Manufaktur, baubles are individually painted according to guest requests. Thousands of visitors commute between the Glass Museum, Foundry Square, and the market — a vibrant showcase of the intangible UNESCO cultural heritage of «Manual Glass Production in Lauscha».
The small glassblowing town of Lauscha is located on the heights of the Thuringian Slate Mountains in the Sonneberg district (state of Thuringia), near the Bavarian border. During the Bauble Market, the town is regularly overcrowded — the police direct traffic from the A73, and shuttle buses from Sonneberg and Neuhaus am Rennweg are highly recommended. Those who want to experience the market more peacefully should come on Friday or Sunday afternoon.
The 34th edition adheres to the established format: two consecutive Advent weekends when the Glass Mile and Foundry Square become a Lauscha Christmas Wonderland. Over 50 glassblowing families and artisans present their workshops and stands, complemented by street food, mulled wine, bratwurst, and Lauscha specialties. Live glassblowing at Foundry Square every 30 minutes.
