Sunday market with fashion show, music, and Sunday shopping — 2026 with Men's Choir anniversary (150 years)
Neuhaus am Rennweg is a town in the Sonneberg district in southern Thuringia — located directly on the Rennsteig ridge at an altitude of around 830 meters, making it one of Germany's highest towns. The spring festival on the last Sunday in May is Neuhaus's most important spring event. On this Sunday, the town festival, market, and Sunday shopping combine into one large festival mile that takes over the entire market square and Kirchweg.
In 2026, a special occasion coincides with the spring festival: the Neuhaus Men's Choir celebrates its 150th anniversary. Starting at 5 PM, a celebratory concert will be held in the Neuhaus wooden church to mark the anniversary — a rare wooden church in Thuringia, offering the ideal stage for choral music with its unique acoustics. This gives the 2026 spring festival a cultural-historical accent that goes far beyond the usual Volksfest program.
During the day, fashion shows by local clothing stores take place — a format established in Neuhaus for years, where business owners present their spring and summer collections on the open-air stage. In parallel, the shops are open for Sunday shopping. Market stalls with regional products — cheese, sausage, honey, crafts — line the festival mile. Regional bands and solo musicians alternate on the main stage.
A special feature in 2026: the new branch of Sparkasse Neuhaus and the WissensWerk city library (both at Sonneberger Straße 2) are opening their doors for open house days on the festival day. The spring festival thus combines with the introduction of new urban infrastructure — a typical southern German festival concept that bundles market, culture, business, and administration into one day.
Neuhaus has a long tradition as a glassmaking town. In the 18th and 19th centuries, the town was one of the centers of glass and Christmas tree ornament production in southern Thuringia. Today, the town thrives on tourism (Rennsteig hikers, winter sports enthusiasts) and a small industrial base. With around 5,600 inhabitants, it is a manageable size, typical of the Rennsteig towns: high-altitude, quiet, with a clear connection to the landscape.
On the last Sunday in May, Neuhaus am Rennweg transforms into an open-air festival mile. The market square and Kirchweg are traffic-calmed and offer space for fashion shows, market stalls, musical performances, and Sunday shopping.
The musical highlight at 5 PM is the celebratory concert for the 150th anniversary of the Neuhaus Men's Choir in the wooden church — a rare and acoustically special venue. The choir celebrates 150 years of tradition with this anniversary and presents a festive program of choral music from the past 150 years.
