The great jazz festival of Saarland with a world-class program
Invented in 2023, already in the standard repertoire of the most important European jazz festivals by 2026: the fill in — International Jazz Festival Saar. Behind the curation is Saarbrücken drummer and university lecturer Oliver Strauch, who pursues a clear vision: top-class jazz from Europe and overseas should be regularly heard in Saarland — and Saarbrücken should become a real festival location, moving from being a musical waiting room between Cologne and Paris.
The 2026 festival is spread over four days and several venues: June 25 — Opening with “fill in Bars & Clubs”: Young jazz musicians transform St. Johanner Markt — the pulsating heart of Saarbrücken's old town — into an open-air jazz club with performances in bars, bistros, and restaurants. June 26–28 — the main festival at E-Werk Saarbrücken, a former industrial hall on Dr.-Tietz-Straße, which is now considered a concert hall with excellent acoustics.
The 2026 headliner program is unusually strong: Mario Biondi, Italian soul-jazz baritone with Roberta Flack in his ear (Friday, June 26); Rebekka Bakken, Norwegian-American singer with a distinctive phrasing (Saturday, June 27); the legendary Yellowjackets from the USA — fusion pioneers since 1977 (Sunday, June 28). Also featured are Grégory Privat (Martinique, piano trio), Antonio Lizana (Spanish flamenco-jazz saxophonist), and Louisiana Avenue (New Orleans jazz with German roots).
fill in has now become a year-round format. In addition to Saarbrücken, the team plays at other venues in Saarland: a two-day Bostalsee open-air on July 31 and August 1, a concert evening in the Stadthalle St. Ingbert on October 24 (Francesca Tandoi Trio), a series “fill in Avenue” at Saarbrücken's Eurobahnhof (May 8), and a program at the Saarland state representation in Berlin on October 9. This allows the festival to virtually travel abroad — and makes Saarland visible in the federal capital.
Saarbrücken — the state capital of Saarland with just 180,000 inhabitants — repeatedly surprises with the quality of its festival. Its proximity to France (TGV in 1h45 from Paris), Luxembourg, and the Palatinate makes the festival a cross-border event. Those arriving by TGV often combine it with a weekend in Saarbrücken: the old town around St. Johann, the Saar river promenade, Schlossberg hill, plus restaurants with influences from Lorraine, Saarland, and Lebanon.
