The traditional Kirchweih on the last weekend of August in the market town of Weisendorf
The Kirchweih Weisendorf, simply called "Kerwa" in Franconian dialect, is one of Middle Franconia's characteristic village festivals. Weisendorf has a special feature: the Kirchweih here applies to both denominations. Protestant and Catholic believers celebrate together – a custom that dates back to the 19th century, when the Catholic Church of St. Joseph was consecrated on August 30, 1885, precisely on the traditional Kirchweih Sunday of the Protestant community.
The Kerwa is celebrated on the last Sunday in August and extends over several days. Highlights include the solemn erection of the Kirchweih tree by the local youth, a family afternoon, and live music. In past years, bands like "Faded Glory" created a great atmosphere with their rock cover versions. Festival activities with Franconian cuisine, beer, and convivial gatherings round off the program.
The market town of Weisendorf and its districts maintain a whole series of Kirchweihen throughout the year:
Weisendorf is located in the district of Erlangen-Höchstadt in the state of Bavaria, nestled in the gentle hilly landscape of the Aischgrund. Here, the Kerwa is far more than just a festival: it is an expression of village community, where clubs, youth, and the community work together and Franconian conviviality is cultivated.
From August 28 to 31, 2026, the market town of Weisendorf will celebrate its traditional Kerwa. The event usually kicks off with the erection of the Kirchweih tree by the local youth, followed by festival activities, live music, and a family afternoon. The Kirchweih on the last Sunday in August is celebrated by both denominations in Weisendorf, making it a communal festival for the entire town in the district of Erlangen-Höchstadt.
Friday/Saturday: Erection of the Kirchweih tree by the local youth, festival activities with live music and Franconian cuisine.
Sunday: Kirchweih Sunday with services from both denominations, family afternoon.
Monday: Winding down of the Kerwa.
Admission to the Kirchweih is free. Costs are only incurred for food, drinks, and any rides on-site.
