Three days of wine festival in decorated winegrowers' courtyards — September 4th to 6th, 2026
Weinböhla — located on the northwestern edge of the Saxony wine region, in the Meißen district — is one of Saxony's most traditional wine-growing towns. Wine has been cultivated here for centuries, primarily on the south-facing slopes around the town and in the wider region of the Elbe valley basin. The Weinböhlaer Winzerstraßenfest — held annually on the first weekend of September — is the grand celebration of this tradition. In 2026, it runs from September 4th to 6th.
The special feature of the wine festival: It doesn't take place on a festival ground, but in the decorated winegrowers' courtyards around the Kirchplatz. Visitors stroll through the courtyards of local wineries, enjoying regional wines from the Elbe valley basin served directly by the vintner — alongside international wines, beer, non-alcoholic drinks, and food. The historic architecture of the courtyards — many from the 18th and 19th centuries — creates an intimate, almost village-like atmosphere, clearly distinguishing the festival from the usual wine festival format.
The festival program opens on Friday, September 4th, at 5 PM with the ceremonial tapping of the first barrel by the mayor and the reigning Saxon Wine Queen. Throughout the three days, live music of various genres will be performed in several courtyards — from brass bands and folk dance to pop, rock, and Schlager. Characteristic is the traditional wagon race on Saturday, a competition among local clubs with historic wagons through the town. There is also a shooting competition and a market with vendors, crafts, and regional products. The grand finale on Sunday at 9:30 PM is a spectacular fireworks display over the Kirchplatz.
Weinböhla is a municipality in the Meißen district of Saxony — about 20 km northwest of Dresden, on the edge of the historic Lommatzscher Pflege. The region belongs to the Saxony wine-growing area, one of Germany's smallest and northernmost wine-growing regions. Saxon wines — primarily Goldriesling, Müller-Thurgau, Riesling, and some red varieties — have a distinct profile and are increasingly appreciated by wine connoisseurs. Alongside the wine festival in Radebeul and the Diesbar wine festivals, the Weinböhla festival is one of the most important stages for Saxon wine culture.
