Advent Market by the Village Pond

Schönkirchen is located in the Plön district, at the transition between the Kiel Fjord and the Probstei peninsula. The village pond in the town center forms the natural heart of the community — and on Advent weekend, also the heart of the Christmas market. Stalls are set up around the pond, fir trees are erected, fairy lights are strung; mulled wine, bratwurst, potato pancakes, and North German specialties provide the winter aroma.

Lighting of the Houses as the Highlight

A special feature of the Schönkirchen market is the joint lighting of the houses around the pond on Saturday evening — a tradition where private homes, shops, and public buildings switch on their Christmas lights at a coordinated time. The spectacle is impressive: within a few minutes, the entire town center transforms into a winter light sculpture.

Association Engagement and Village Community

The Christmas market is organized by the Traders and Business Association (HGV) Schönkirchen in cooperation with the Culture and Landscape Preservation Association and the municipality. The stalls are primarily run by Schönkirchen associations, businesses, and craftspeople — an example of an association-driven Advent festival that makes the village community visible.

Schönkirchen in the Amt Schrevenborn

The municipality of Schönkirchen belongs to the Amt Schrevenborn in the Plön district. With around 6,500 inhabitants, it is located on the Schwentine river in the Kiel region and is easily accessible via the A21 (Klausdorf exit) and public transport from Kiel. The Christmas market complements the markets in Schönberg, Stein, and Probsteierhagen in the Probstei Advent calendar.
