Village Christmas Market on the 3rd Advent in the Greiz District
Langenwolschendorf is a small municipality in the southern Thuringian district of Greiz, located at the transition to the Saxon Vogtland. The rural community, known for its hilly landscape, scattered orchards, and close-knit village community, has just under 1,000 inhabitants. On the third weekend of Advent, the central community square transforms into a small but atmospheric Christmas market – a typical village experience far from the mass tourism of big city markets.
As in many small communities in Thuringia, the local fire department plays a key role in community life. The Langenwolschendorf Volunteer Fire Department Association has been organizing the market on a voluntary basis for many years, running the tombola, setting up stalls, and providing mulled wine and refreshments. Traditionally, half of the proceeds are donated to the children's wards of the Jena University Hospital and the other half to the Langenwolschendorf youth fire department – a communal gesture that elevates the market beyond a mere commercial event.
The market is manageable: a few stalls from village associations and neighbours, with homemade stollen, cookies, hearty snacks (sausages, roulades, stew), regional handicrafts (wood carvings from the Erzgebirge, knitted mittens, beeswax candles), and of course mulled wine, punch, and children's punch. A programme with a brass choir, local children's groups, and pre-Christmas stories accompanies the afternoon.
While the famous markets in Erfurt, Weimar, or Gera attract hundreds of thousands, Langenwolschendorf consciously remains small and local. Those who want to experience rural Thuringia without tourist staging, who value direct encounters, regional products, and voluntary commitment, will find a special destination here for the third Advent. The atmosphere in the glow of the fairy lights and to the sound of the fire brigade band cannot be bought – it is created by a village celebrating together.
The village Christmas market in Langenwolschendorf follows the fixed date of the "3rd Sunday of Advent" — in 2026, this is December 20th. The market opens in the early afternoon (typically from 1:00 PM) and remains open until the evening hours. The exact times and detailed programme will be announced in the weeks leading up to the event on the community website and by the fire department association.
The complete programme will be published before the Advent weekend on langenwolschendorf.de.
