Community-run Advent market at Theobald-Hock-Platz in the Kirkel-Limbach district
Limbach is one of the three districts of the municipality of Kirkel in the Saarpfalz district – alongside Kirkel-Neuhäusel and Altstadt. With the well-known Burg Kirkel (Kirkel Castle) as an important regional landmark and the rural, gently rolling landscape of the Bliesgau, the municipality forms a scenically attractive corner of eastern Saarland. On the second Advent weekend, the Theobald-Hock-Platz in the centre of Limbach transforms into a small but fine Christmas market – organised by the Limbach Local Council in cooperation with local associations and the Protestant church community.
The special feature of the Limbach Christmas market is its spatial division: The main market with stalls, mulled wine and bratwurst stands takes place on the Theobald-Hock-Platz around the church. In parallel, the Theobald-Hock-Haus – the community centre of the Protestant church community – opens its doors for an Advent bazaar featuring handicrafts, homemade baked goods, and crafts. Those needing a break from the cold on the square will find a warm atmosphere and often live music or coffee and cake in the Theobald-Hock-Haus.
The namesake of the square and the house is Theobald Hock (1573 – after 1623), an important German Baroque poet, who was presumably born in Limbach. His “Schönes Blumenfeld" (Beautiful Flower Field) (1601) is considered one of the earliest works of German secular poetry in the Renaissance tradition. The fact that a village of a few hundred inhabitants names its central square and community centre after a poet says a lot about the self-image and historical identity of the place.
A highlight of the market is the traditional visit from St. Nicholas on Sunday around 6:00 PM, where children receive gifts and Christmas carols are sung together. The market is clearly structured to be family-friendly – without the tourist character of larger markets, but with a genuine village atmosphere.
The Limbach Christmas market is part of a multi-part Advent programme in the municipality of Kirkel, which includes the Kirkeler Burgweynacht (a medieval Christmas market at the castle ruins on the 3rd Advent weekend) and smaller Advent events in Kirkel-Neuhäusel. Those who visited Limbach on the 2nd Advent can visit the Burgweynacht a week later – both markets complement each other in their atmosphere.
The market is organised by the Limbach Local Council and local associations; the Advent bazaar is supported by the Protestant church community. The 2026 programme will be published by the municipality of Kirkel in late autumn.
