Cinema under the Walls of Kirkel Castle

Kirkel Castle is one of the significant castle ruins in Saarland – located on a sandstone rock above the Kirkel forest, founded in the 12th century, destroyed in the 17th century, but archaeologically researched with great effort and made accessible for events. In summer, the Handwerkerdorf (craftsmen's village) in front of the castle walls transforms into an open-air stage – sometimes for concerts, sometimes for medieval markets, and on one summer evening in August: for the Sommernachtskino.

Concept of the Open-Air Cinema

The Sommernachtskino is a curated single screening, organized annually by the Cultural Office of the municipality of Kirkel. Unlike commercial open-air cinema weeks with 7 or 14 films, here only one film is shown per year – carefully selected based on criteria of quality, family suitability, and atmosphere. In 2024, the German tragicomedy film "Wochenendrebellen" was shown, a film about an autistic boy's journey with his father to German football stadiums. The Cultural Office traditionally announces which film will be shown in 2026 a few weeks before the date.

Atmosphere and Schedule

Admission is at 8:00 PM. Until the film begins around 9:30 PM (depending on sunset), the audience is catered to by the Förderkreis Kirkeler Burg (Friends of Kirkel Castle Association) – with Saarland specialties (Schwenker, Bratwurst, Flammkuchen) and cool drinks. The cinema is seated; free choice of seats. When the sun disappears behind the castle ruins, the screening begins. The combination of the cinema screen, ancient sandstone walls, and starry sky is one of the special visual experiences that Saarland has to offer.

Embedded in the Kirkel Castle Summer

The Sommernachtskino is one of several highlights of the so-called "Kirkeler Burgsommer" (Kirkel Castle Summer), a program series organized by the Cultural Office around the castle from spring to early autumn. This includes, among other things, the large castle festival with a medieval market in June, concerts (classical, folk, pop), readings, and in autumn the medieval "Burgweynacht" (Castle Wine Night) during Advent. The Sommernachtskino fits into this series as a summery cinematic highlight.

Kirkel and the Sandstone Cave

Anyone visiting Kirkel should also see the Felsenmeer (Sea of Rocks) hiking trails, which lead through a spectacular sandstone landscape, in addition to the castle and the "Burgsommer". The municipality of Kirkel in the Saarpfalz district – despite having just under 10,000 inhabitants – is one of the most scenically attractive places in Saarland and an ideal day trip from Saarbrücken (approx. 25 km) or Homburg (5 km).
