Advent magic on the Danish border

Harrislee is the largest municipality on the German-Danish border in the district of Schleswig-Flensburg in the state of Schleswig-Holstein. With around 11,000 inhabitants, it lies immediately north of Flensburg and benefits from cross-border trade with Danish neighbors. The annual Christmas market on the 1st Advent weekend is one of the municipality's identifying events.

The Concept

Unlike the large Christmas markets in neighboring cities (Flensburg, Glücksburg), the Harrislee Christmas Market is a deliberately small, family-friendly event — a one-day format on the market square with:

• Stalls from regional providers and local associations
• Mulled wine, punch, and hot chocolate
• Bratwurst, crêpes, potato pancakes, and specialties
• Live music from local choirs and soloists
• Children's program — possibly a visit from Santa Claus
• Light art in the market square

Proximity to the border and Danish influence

The proximity to Denmark also shapes the Christmas market — Danish specialties such as Æbleskiver (apple fritters) or Glögg are typically found alongside classic German mulled wine. Visitors from Danish border communities Padborg, Kruså, and Bov are regularly present.

Community focus as a hallmark

The Harrislee Christmas Market is organized directly by the municipal administration in cooperation with local retailers and associations. It's less about spectacle and more about encounters — neighbors meet neighbors, association members sell at their own stalls, the mayor is available for conversation. This unpretentious atmosphere makes the market a typically North German-reserved, yet very warm-hearted, start to Advent.
