Whit Monday at the Schlachtmühle Jever — German Mill Day with guided tours and traditional experience in May 2026
The German Mill Day has been initiated annually on Whit Monday since 1994 by the German Society for Mill Studies and Mill Preservation (DGM) and is celebrated by hundreds of mills across Germany. The aim is to make the cultural heritage of historical mills accessible to a broad audience, to raise awareness of the importance of mill technology, and to support the preservation of mill facilities, which are often operated with great voluntary commitment. The Schlachtmühle Jever is part of this nationwide network.
The Schlachtmühle Jever at Hooksweg 9 is one of the historical mills in the Frisian town. For centuries, mills—both windmills and watermills—were a central part of rural life. They were used to grind grain into flour, press oil from rapeseed, prepare mustard, and produce a variety of other products. With industrialization, many mills lost their economic function but were preserved as cultural monuments. The Jeversche Schlachtmühle is such a monument, maintained with great dedication and made accessible to the public on special occasions like the German Mill Day.
On Whit Monday, May 25, 2026, the Schlachtmühle Jever will open its doors from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Visitors can view the historical mill technology, take part in guided tours, and learn more about the history of mill craftsmanship. Often, the mills are put into operation on such occasions, allowing visitors to experience the functionality of the historical facilities firsthand. Food and drinks are usually offered, and tastings of mill products (bread, baked goods, muesli) are often part of the program.
The German Mill Day is celebrated by hundreds of mills across Germany, allowing visitors to visit several mills in the region on a single day. In Friesland and East Frisia, mills are a characteristic feature of the landscape, and Mill Day offers the ideal opportunity for a cultural-historical mill tour. The Schlachtmühle Jever is one of the easily accessible facilities with a central town location.
Whit Monday offers the opportunity from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. to visit the historical Schlachtmühle Jever, participate in guided tours, and learn more about the traditional mill craftsmanship. The exact program will be announced in advance by the Schlachtmühle or the responsible mill association.
