About Grogtörn

The Flensburger Grogtörn is one of Schleswig-Holstein's most extraordinary maritime traditions: every year on the second Christmas day (December 26th), the "hardy souls" meet at Flensburg's Museum Harbour for a joint winter excursion on the Flensburg Fjord. All types of ships are welcome—traditional sailing ships, sports boats, workboats—the only entry requirement is a bottle of rum. Departure is around 11 AM, return around 3 PM, after which the convivial gathering continues on the ship Gesine, which serves as a meeting point in the Museum Harbour. A tradition that has been maintained since the early 1990s and is one of the absolute fixed dates in the Flensburg harbour scene.

Flensburg Museum Harbour — Living Maritime Culture

Flensburg is Germany's northernmost major city and is located in the state of Schleswig-Holstein, directly on the Flensburg Fjord, on the German-Danish border. The Museum Harbour at Schiffbrücke is one of the largest museum harbour areas in Northern Germany—not an open-air collection, but a living harbour where traditional sailing ships and workboats are moored year-round and operated by the association Museumshafen Flensburg e.V.

Grog and its Tradition

Grog is a hot drink made from rum, hot water, and sugar, which originally originated on British ships and became a typical winter tradition in Northern Germany. The saying "Rum is a must, sugar is optional, water is not needed" is proverbial in Flensburg. This very drink is the namesake of the Grogtörn—a winter excursion where bringing rum is the condition for entry.

Second Christmas Day on the Fjord

The Grogtörn takes place every year on December 26th, the second Christmas day. It is aimed at everyone who keeps their boats in the water all year round—so not the sports boat faction that lays up their yachts on land in winter, but "the hardy souls." Departure from Flensburg Museum Harbour around 11 AM, joint trip on the fjord, return around 3 PM. Afterwards, all participants meet on the ship Gesine, which serves as a meeting point in the Museum Harbour, for maritime conversation and refreshments.

What Makes the Grogtörn Special

  • Date — December 26th, one of the quietest days of the year
  • Entry Requirement — a bottle of rum as a contribution
  • All Ship Types Welcome — traditional sailing ships, sports boats, workboats
  • Gesine Base — convivial conclusion in the Museum Harbour
  • Tradition Since the Early 1990s — archive photos document the event back to 1995

Region: Flensburg Fjord

The trip leads to the Flensburg Fjord—one of the most beautiful fjords on the Baltic Sea, often with its own, almost melancholic atmosphere in winter. The maritime tradition of the fjord lives on in associations like the Museum Harbour, which offer programmes year-round and keep Flensburg's old harbour culture alive with events like the Grogtörn.
