Geesthacht — the Elbe town in the district of Herzogtum Lauenburg
Geesthacht is located on the Elbe in the district of Herzogtum Lauenburg in the state of Schleswig-Holstein, about 35 kilometres southeast of Hamburg. The town has a strong maritime identity — the Geesthacht harbour, the Geesthacht weir, and the shipyards shape the town centre. With the concert series "Musik am Hafen", the Tourist Information uses precisely this harbour atmosphere as a stage.
Five Wednesday evenings — a curated format
Instead of a concentrated festival weekend, "Musik am Hafen" opts for a seasonal format: five concerts are spread across the entire summer season, each on Wednesdays starting at 7:00 PM. This creates a recurring urban rhythm anchored in the middle of the week — Geesthacht and Hamburg guests know: every Wednesday (on the specified dates) there's a concert.
Genre mix: from Funk to Shantypolka
The 2026 programme shows the genre diversity of the series:
- 20 May 2026 — Radius (German Funk)
- 10 June 2026 — Main Projekt (Party band from Würzburg)
- 8 July 2026 — Tears for Beers (Folk)
- 5 August 2026 — The KaiserBeats (Osnabrück, Rock'n'Roll & Beat)
- 2 September 2026 — Mahoin (Hamburg, Shantypolka) — closing concert
Venue: Terraced seating at the harbour basin
The terraced seating at the harbour basin extends along Steinstraße and at Menzer-Werft-Platz — an urban-enhanced harbour area with steps, seating, and direct water views. The stage is set up on the bank; the audience sits and stands on the terraces — a relaxed, almost Italian ambiance on the Elbe.
Free admission, catering on site, house rules
As with a growing number of northern German urban concert series, admission is free. Catering is available on site (snack stands, drinks wagons). Important house rules: glass bottles are forbidden for safety reasons (Geesthacht has no sandy beach, but the harbour basin is a direct danger source if glass breaks). Your own chairs may not be brought along — the terraced seating offers sufficient space to sit and stand. Barrier-free area to the left of the bridge for wheelchair and walker users.
Tourist Information as organiser
The organiser is the Geesthacht Tourist Information, managed by Bettina Knoop. The series is part of the city's event concept and serves equally to foster local identity and to profile Geesthacht as a harbour and Elbe town for tourism.
