About Worms Cathedral Concerts

Worms Cathedral of St. Peter — one of the three great Rhenish imperial cathedrals of the High Middle Ages — regularly hosts musical events throughout the year. The "Cathedral Concerts" bundle the summer offerings: organ concerts on the three historic organs, choir and orchestra concerts, as well as sacred vespers and liturgies. Organized by the Diocese of Mainz and the Worms Cathedral Parish Group, the series benefits from the exceptional acoustics of the three-nave Romanesque basilica and brings together international soloists with local ensembles, the Cathedral Choir, and the Cathedral Singers.

The Cathedral as a Concert Hall

With its mighty Romanesque nave, soaring crossing tower, and historical structure dating from the 11th to 13th centuries, Worms Cathedral of St. Peter is far more than a sacred building: it is one of the most important concert venues in Southern Germany. The acoustic properties — long reverberation time, clear highs, resonant bass — uniquely shape the listening experience of organ, choir, and orchestral concerts.

Three Organs in the Cathedral

A special feature of Worms Cathedral is its multiple disposition with three organs: the large main organ, the historic choir organ, and the famous "Swallow's Nest Organ" high above the nave. This setup allows for both solo recitals and immersive echo concerts, where multiple organs sound simultaneously or in dialogue.

The Summer Series of Cathedral Concerts

The summer series of Cathedral Concerts typically runs from June to September and includes several focal points: organ concerts with international soloists, sacred choral concerts (Renaissance, Baroque, Romantic, Modern), orchestral and chamber concerts, as well as liturgically integrated events such as vespers and high festivals. The program is created by the Worms Cathedral Parish Group in coordination with the Diocese of Mainz and published on the website bistummainz.de/dom-worms.

Cathedral Choir and Cathedral Singers

The Worms Cathedral Choirs — the Cathedral Choir and the Cathedral Singers — are central to the musical profile. Under the direction of the Cathedral Music Director, they regularly perform liturgical duties and concerts. Sacred works by great composers from Palestrina to Britten find a performance venue here, as do world premieres of contemporary church music.

Worms Cathedral Concerts — edition 2026

In 2026, the Worms Cathedral Parish Group once again invites you to the Cathedral Concerts in St. Peter's Cathedral during the summer months. From June to September, the program includes organ concerts on the three historic cathedral organs, choir and orchestra concerts, and sacred vespers. The exceptional acoustics of the Romanesque basilica, the brilliance of the Swallow's Nest Organ, and the combination of liturgical music with concert formats characterize the series. Exact dates and program content will be continuously published by the Worms Cathedral Parish Group and the Diocese of Mainz.

The Worms Cathedral Concerts 2026 continue the long-standing tradition of the summer series. The concerts are open to audiences interested in church and church music, as well as tourists and city visitors. The admission price regularly includes a program booklet with commentary on the works.
