Family brewery festival on Weihenstephaner Berg in Freising
The Weihenstephaner Bergfest is the annual summer family festival of the Bayerische Staatsbrauerei Weihenstephan – one of the oldest breweries in the world, with traditions dating back to 1040. The venue is the historic Akademiehof on Weihenstephaner Berg in Freising, right at the seat of the state brewery and the Weihenstephan-Triesdorf University of Applied Sciences.
The focus is on freshly tapped Weihenstephaner beer in its various varieties – from Helles to Hefeweissbier and Pils to Festbier. The brewery also serves classic Bavarian festival dishes: Hendl (roast chicken), Schweinshaxe (pork knuckle), Steckerlfisch (grilled fish on a stick), Bratwurst (sausage), Brezn (pretzels), and sweet specialties like ice cream and Krapfen (doughnuts). Non-alcoholic beverages and alcohol-free beer specialties are also part of the offering.
Musically, the Bergfest follows a clear structure: brass music during the day with bands like the Stadtkapelle Freising or the in-house Premium Bavaricum Blaskapelle. Towards the evening, a party/dance band takes over, transforming the Akademiehof into an open-air dance floor. The festival usually ends around 11 PM.
The family character is part of the program: a comprehensive children's area with a bouncy castle, carousel, mini-train, magic show, and face painting is available all day. This gives the Weihenstephaner Bergfest a distinct profile alongside the region's traditional folk festivals (Frühlingsfest Munich, Oktoberfest, Bergfeste in neighboring communities).
Freising is a town in the district of Freising in Upper Bavaria, about 35 km northeast of Munich on the edge of the Munich gravel plain. On the Weihenstephaner Berg above the town are the Bayerische Staatsbrauerei Weihenstephan and the campus of the Technical University of Munich – making the location a hub for both beer and brewing science. The Bergfest embraces this dual identity.
The 16th Weihenstephaner Bergfest 2026 will take place on Tuesday, August 4, 2026, in the Akademiehof of the state brewery. The festival ends around 11 PM. The tourism association of the Freising district and the brewery have confirmed the date.
In terms of content, the edition follows the proven structure: Premium Bavaricum Blaskapelle and other brass bands provide the Bavarian soundscape during the day, while an evening band takes over with party music to maintain the atmosphere until the end of the festival.
On the menu: the full range of Bayerische Staatsbrauerei Weihenstephan beers (Helles, Hefeweissbier, Pils, non-alcoholic varieties, seasonal specialties) as well as Bavarian festival cuisine with Hendl, Steckerlfisch, Haxe, Bratwurst, Brezn, and desserts.
Free admission. Food, drinks, and rides are paid for on-site. Attention: Cash is often the only accepted payment method on-site – bring enough cash.
Freising is located directly at Munich Airport (S-Bahn lines S1/S8). From Freising train station, it's about a 15-minute walk up Weihenstephaner Berg, or you can take a bus. By car, take the A92 (Munich–Deggendorf) and exit at Freising-Ost.
