Premiere 2026 — Sustainable neighbourhood festival in Hagen's Wehringhausen district
Wehringhausen Öffne Dich! is a new neighbourhood festival taking place for the first time on Saturday, July 4, 2026, from 12:00 PM to 6:00 PM. The festival originates from the "Klimapositives Wehringhausen" project, supported by the Hagen-based association Hatopia — Nachhaltigkeitszentrum e.V., and is realised in cooperation with the neighbouring WirrWarr — Zentrum für Kreativität.
The core idea: Wehringhausen — Hagen's densely populated district characterised by its Gründerzeit architecture — opens its usually closed-off spaces for one day. Backyards, creative spaces, shops, pubs, restaurants, and community centres become stages, workshops, pop-up galleries, and meeting points. Residents themselves shape the programme — as hosts, artists, cooks, or simply as conversation partners.
The festival is part of Wehringhausen's climate protection initiative "Klimapositives Wehringhausen". Topics such as sustainable mobility, repair cafés, urban gardening, swap stations, vegan cuisine, and energy advice find their place here — embedded in a vibrant neighbourhood culture rather than in workshop rooms. The concept follows a growing movement in German major cities: climate protection is lived in the urban quarter, not centrally mandated.
Wehringhausen is located west of Hagen's city centre and, with its Gründerzeit facades, high proportion of migrants, and active creative scene, is one of the most vibrant districts in Hagen (independent city, approx. 188,000 inhabitants, in the southeastern Ruhr area/northern Sauerland region of North Rhine-Westphalia). Lange Straße — home to co-werk and WirrWarr — forms the cultural backbone of the quarter.
Interested parties can contact the organisers — registration is online via wirrwarr-wehringhausen.de, by email to [email protected], or in person at co-werk (Lange Str. 22, 58089 Hagen) on Tuesdays between 10:00 AM and 3:00 PM.
Conceived as a neighbourhood festival for the first time, the 2026 programme will be spread across the entire district. Residents, local businesses, and community structures will open their usually private spaces for six hours. The programme will be decentralised — each participating venue will plan its own offering, from mini-concerts in backyards to repair cafés, vegan tastings, and swap stations.
The detailed programme schedule will be published shortly before the festival on hatopia.de and wirrwarr-wehringhausen.de. As this is a premiere, programme items will be added until shortly before the event.
Free admission. Individual offerings (workshops, food) may be subject to a charge.
By car: Take the A45/A46 to Hagen, then follow signs for Wehringhausen. Parking is limited — arrival by public transport or bicycle is recommended. Wehringhausen is accessible via several bus and tram lines from Hagen city centre.
Free.
The programme schedule will be published on the Hatopia website shortly before the festival. Those who wish to participate should register early — the registration deadline is usually a few weeks before the festival date.
