Warburg — Hanseatic City in the Eggegebirge
Warburg, with just under 23,000 inhabitants in the Höxter district of North Rhine-Westphalia, is one of the oldest Hanseatic cities in Ostwestfalen. The medieval city with its unique twin-city structure — Altstadt (Old Town) and Neustadt (New Town) separated by a city wall and the Diemel river — belonged to the Hanseatic League from the 14th century onwards and benefited from long-distance trade in cloth, wax, and iron. Today, the city actively cultivates this history through the association Warburger Hanse e.V., which represents membership in the Westphalian Hanseatic League and the International Hanseatic League.
Medieval Market in the Truest Sense
The Warburg Hanse Festival combines two event formats over one weekend: a classic medieval market and the Hanseatic Exhibition of friendly Hanseatic cities. The medieval market takes place on the Neustadtmarkt and in the surrounding streets. Amidst campfires, the scent of spiced beer, and mead goblets, traders and craftspeople set up historic tents: blacksmiths, woodturners, basket weavers, wool spinners, parchment makers. Juggler performances, magic shows, fakirs, a fire show on Saturday evening, a tavern game, and children's storytelling sessions round off the program. The atmosphere is enhanced by medieval music — in 2026 by the bands Tarranis, Duo Asatru, and Lend'n Ear.
The Hanseatic Exhibition — Westphalia and Beyond
While the medieval market provides the historic setting, the Hanseatic Exhibition is the political and tourist core of the festival. Current Hanseatic cities present themselves with their own stalls: Salzwedel in the Altmark region with its Salzwedeler Baumkuchen, Brilon in the Sauerland region with the freshly crowned 21st Briloner Waldfee (Forest Fairy) making her first appearance outside her hometown, Höxter with the “Elfe Holli” campaign to promote the Huxarium garden park, plus Bad Iburg, Brakel, Nieheim, Willebadessen, and Borgentreich. Representatives from these cities are on-site and available for discussions.
On the Way to Hanseatic Day 2036
The Hanse Festival is part of a long-term strategy: Warburg has applied to host the International Hanseatic Day in 2036 — the largest gathering of today's Hanseatic cities from 16 nations. Through the annual Hanse Festival, the city is gradually building the networks, structures, and visibility that will qualify it for this hosting role. Visitors to the Hanse Festival are therefore not just experiencing a city festival, but an element of diplomatic city marketing in medieval disguise.
City Biathlon and Open Sunday
On Sunday, the City Biathlon brings a modern touch to the historic setting: teams and children's categories race through the city center and shoot at flip targets with light rifles — a playful activity combining sport and the medieval theme. In parallel, Warburg's shops open for the open Sunday (1 PM–6 PM), and city tours for adults and children complete the program.
