About Warburg Kälkenfest

From Friday, 14th to Sunday, 16th August 2026, the historic Old Town of Warburg will transform into a journey through time: The Warburg Kälkenfest is a historic town festival with over 1,000 years of history, a citizens' play with hundreds of participants in historical costumes, a staged reenactment of the siege of Warburg by the "mad Christian" around 400 years ago, as well as colourful parades, music, food, and merry gatherings throughout the Old Town area. The name Kälkenfest refers to the historical lime pits (Kälken in Westphalian dialect), where Warburg's tanners practised their trade outside the medieval city walls near the Diemel river — a direct link between today's folk festival and the Hanseatic city's economic identity. The festival is organised by the Heimat- und Verkehrsverein Warburg e.V. (Local Heritage and Tourist Association); a 2026 flyer is available on the association's website. The second weekend in August has long been the fixed date — a summer highlight in the Hochstift Paderborn region.

Warburg — the Hanseatic City in Southern East Westphalia

Warburg, a town of around 22,000 inhabitants in the Höxter district in eastern Westphalia, lies picturesquely in the Diemel valley between the Sauerland and Eggegebirge regions. The town has an unusually long and eventful history: a former Hanseatic city, the seat of an important pilgrimage site (Pilgrimage Church of Maria Visitationis), and for centuries caught in the power struggle between the Archbishopric of Cologne and the Duchy of Brunswick-Lüneburg. The historic Old Town is one of the best-preserved in Westphalia — with its complete city walls, towers, half-timbered houses, and a market square that has remained unchanged since the late Middle Ages. The Warburg Kälkenfest has taken place against this backdrop for years.

The Name — the Kälken by the Diemel River

The unusual name Kälkenfest goes back to the historical lime pits (Kälken in Westphalian dialect): In these pits outside the medieval city walls, near the Diemel river, the tanners practised their trade — an economically important, but also smelly activity that had to be located outside the city so as not to disturb the other citizens. The tanning tradition shaped Warburg for centuries, and the name Kälkenfest keeps this history alive today.

The Citizens' Play — Hundreds of Participants in Historical Costumes

The centrepiece of the festival is the citizens' play: Hundreds of Warburg citizens don historical costumes — patricians, craftsmen, maids, guards, clergy, pilgrims, beggars — and bring the Old Town to life in a multi-day staged performance. Historical scenes from Warburg's town history are performed on the market square and at several fixed locations: court hearings, market activities, craft demonstrations, reception of pilgrims.

The Siege by the "Mad Christian"

A special highlight is the staged reenactment of the siege of Warburg by the "mad Christian" — Christian of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel, a Protestant military leader during the Thirty Years' War, who camped near Warburg in 1622. This siege around 400 years ago is recreated with costumes, extras, and a small pyrotechnic display — a lesson on the harshness of war and, at the same time, a tribute to the bravery of the citizens of Warburg.

Parades, Music, and Culinary Delights

Surrounding the historical reenactments, colourful parades through the Old Town streets characterise the festival: traditional costume groups, brass bands, pipe bands, rider delegations, decorated floats. Live music is played on several squares — from medieval music with hurdy-gurdy and bagpipes to folk music and pop cover bands in the evening. Culinary, the Kälkenfest is classically Westphalian: bratwurst, potato pancakes (Reibekuchen), Pumpernickel bread, regional beers, Westphalian snack platters (Brotzeit-Brett), and for a historical atmosphere: mead, stick bread over an open fire, suckling pig on a spit.

Identity — "Work and Pleasure"

The organisers describe the festival as an expression of Warburg's identity: "Music, food and drinks, merry gatherings in leisure time" — a mix of work and pleasure that is characteristic of Warburg and is maintained as cultural heritage by the Heimat- und Verkehrsverein.

Heimat- und Verkehrsverein Warburg — The Organiser

The organiser is the Heimat- und Verkehrsverein Warburg e.V., a traditional association that has been responsible for decades for the preservation of Warburg's town history, the tourist marketing of the region, and the organisation of major cultural events. The association works closely with the city administration, Warburg's clubs, and the cultural landscape of East Westphalia.
