Anniversary Edition: 30th Altstädter Weihnachtsmarkt Warburg on the third Advent weekend 2026 with 35 stalls of regional crafts
In 1994, a group of Warburg residents founded the non-profit association Alle Jahre Wieder e.V. with one goal: to create an Altstädter Weihnachtsmarkt on the historic market square with the character of "small, fine, regional, social." In 2026, this market celebrates its 30th edition — three decades of unbroken tradition, during which the market has become the identity-defining Advent weekend for the Hanseatic city of Warburg. On Saturday, December 12th, and Sunday, December 13th, 2026, the Altstadtmarktplatz will transform into a picture-book Advent landscape.
The Altstadtmarktplatz Warburg is one of the most beautiful medieval market squares in Ostwestfalen — framed by half-timbered houses from the 16th and 17th centuries, with the old town hall dating back to 1568 and the baroque Mariensäule (column of Mary) in the center. When 35 festively decorated wooden stalls stand between them on a December weekend, with stall roofs adorned with fir branches and the half-timbered facades glowing in the warm light of fairy lights, an Advent stage set is created that is only possible in a medieval Hanseatic city.
Unlike commercial large Christmas markets (which advertise with plastic fairy lights, imported Christmas baubles, and mass-produced food), the Warburg Altstädter Market is an exclusive craft format. The approximately 35 stalls present:
Anyone looking for authentic, handmade Christmas gifts — not mass-produced, but individual — will find it here. Many exhibitors have been returning for over two decades.
The culinary offerings complement the crafts: Glühwein (mulled wine) (in several variations — classic red, white, fruity), hot apple wine, bratwurst, crêpes, and especially Stockbrot (stick bread), which is grilled on an open fire pit on-site — a highlight for children. A vintage carousel from the 1950s spins on Saturday and Sunday for the youngest visitors. Live music is provided by regional choirs, brass ensembles, and the municipal music school. And of course, St. Nicholas visits the market on both days — with gifts for the children.
The association Alle Jahre Wieder e.V. has operated the market as a purely voluntary project since 1994. The entire proceeds (after deducting costs) are donated to social causes in Warburg: support for social institutions, aid for needy families, promotion of clubs. This social component makes the market more than just a tourist event — it is living community solidarity.
Warburg is a small Hanseatic city with just under 23,000 inhabitants in the district of Höxter, in southeastern Ostwestfalen-Lippe on the border with Hessen. Known for its well-preserved old town, which is part of the German Timber-Frame Road, and for its medieval city wall with its towers. Anyone visiting the Warburg market should arrive a day earlier — a guided tour of the old town (organized by the city marketing) and the Museum im Stern are essential additions.
In the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, the Ostwestfalen-Lippe (OWL) region is known for its particularly distinctive Christmas markets. The Warburg market is one of the most beautiful small markets in the region — not a mass phenomenon like Dortmund or Münster, but an authentic, regional, craft-focused format. The journey is worthwhile for lovers of small, fine Advent formats.
The 30th anniversary edition runs on the third Advent weekend of 2026. On the medieval Altstadtmarktplatz, 35 festively decorated wooden stalls line the area between half-timbered facades, the town hall, and the Mariensäule.
