Three Thursdays City Festival — Children's Play Afternoon and After-Work Party in the Melanchthon City
The Stadtsommer Bretten spreads its 2026 edition over three Thursday dates: May 21, June 18, and July 16, 2026. On each date, Bretten's city center transforms into a communal meeting place with two clear phases — family games in the afternoon, after-work party in the evening.
From 2 PM, the pedestrian zone, market square, and Weißhofer Straße become a giant playground: XXL Connect Four, sandboxes, fishing games, table football, Spikeball, and table tennis. All game stations are freely accessible. Children, teenagers, and adults can all join in — Stadtsommer makes no distinction between generations.
From 6 PM, the program switches to the After-Work Party. Depending on the date, different locations are the center of attention:
DJs and live music acts alternate on stage. A rotating catering crew offers burgers, pinsa, Maultaschen burgers, pasta, ribs, and vegetarian options. Drink bars serve beer, wine, cocktails (alcoholic and non-alcoholic). Those who just want to drop by are well catered for with a free stool at the Stadtstrand.
With around 30,000 inhabitants, Bretten is the largest town in the Karlsruhe district east of the Karlsruhe city limits. Philipp Melanchthon, the most important Reformation theologian after Luther, was born here in 1497 — the town bears his name as a nickname ('Melanchthon City'). The Melanchthon House on the market square commemorates the town's great son. The historic old town with the Hundle Fountain, Stiftskirche, and town wall forms the backdrop for Stadtsommer.
Stadtsommer is organized by the city marketing initiative Erlebe Bretten in cooperation with the City of Bretten. The goal is to establish the city center as a vibrant meeting place even outside the traditional festival days (Peter-und-Paul-Fest, Christmas Market). The three-date concept successfully creates a relaxed, free, and low-threshold summer event.
