Walheim — Aachen's high-altitude district on the Belgian border

Walheim is a southern district of Aachen — nestled in the Kornelimünster/Walheim district, which encompasses the southern highlands of the city in the Eifel foothills. Walheim is located near the Belgian border, has a village-like, rural character, and an active association structure. The association Maijungen Walheim e.V. is a traditional group of young men from the district who organize the annual May Festival — a traditional association, as exists in almost every village in Westphalia and the Rhineland.

Maypole Tradition

The May Festival is not to be confused with the political May Day (Labor Day, May 1st) — but rather an old spring tradition with the raising of the Maypole as its central symbol. The Maypole, decorated with ribbons and possibly with association insignia, is ceremonially erected on Friday evening — as a symbol of spring, community, and adult masculinity. Young men of the Maijungen traditionally guard the pole throughout the night — a humorously serious task that is part of the custom.

Program 2026 — Two Days in the Event Tent

The Walheimer May Festival spans two days — Friday and Saturday. Friday, May 8th, 2026, from 6 PM: Procession with around 250 participants through Walheim, followed by the Maypole raising at the event tent. Saturday, May 9th, 2026, from 3 PM: Family Day with human foosball tournament, bouncy castles, face painting, and craft stations. From 8 PM: Concert by the live band Fahrerflucht — a regionally known cover band that plays pop and rock classics in the event tent.

King and Queen 2026

As in many Rhenish May Festivals, Walheim also has a King and Queen — chosen by the association and representative of the festival. King and Queen 2026: Sofie Schreuer and Max Vondenbusch. They lead the festival procession, ceremonially crown the Maypole raising, and represent the Walheimer May Festival externally.

Social Component — Proceeds for Local Hospices and Children's Organizations

The Walheimer May Festival is not just a celebration, but also a fundraising event: a portion of the proceeds traditionally goes to local hospices and children's organizations in the Aachen region. This gives the festival a social dimension in addition to its traditional character — typical for rural associations in the Rhineland, whose traditions always combine charitable commitment.

Two Days of Tradition and Festival Tent

The King and Queen for 2026 are Sofie Schreuer and Max Vondenbusch.

Saturday opens at 3 PM with Family Day, featuring a human foosball tournament, bouncy castles, face painting, and craft stations — explicitly designed for the younger generation.
