Traditional Christmas market in the chocolate town of Waldenbuch — featuring a 20-meter illuminated Christmas tree
Waldenbuch is primarily known to many people in southern Germany as the Ritter chocolate town: the headquarters of Alfred Ritter GmbH & Co. KG, whose square Ritter Sport bars are among the most famous German chocolate brands, has been located here since 1932. The Ritter Museum with its own chocolate manufactory is one of the region's most important tourist attractions. During Advent, the chocolate tradition lends a special charm to the Christmas market — many stalls offer chocolate specialties in a wide variety of forms.
The Waldenbuch Christmas Market is a classic mid-sized Advent market format: a compact market square, a manageable number of stalls, and a quality-curated selection. The centerpiece is a 20-meter illuminated Christmas tree — a landmark visible from many points in the town. Around the tree, stalls are spread out offering arts and crafts (ceramics, glass, wood from the Schönbuch forest), Advent items (Christmas tree decorations, stars, incense), culinary specialties (mulled wine, homemade bratwurst, Swabian Spätzle, Maultaschen, chocolate fondue, Christmas cookies), and associations selling food and hot drinks for charitable purposes.
Waldenbuch is a small town with just under 8,800 inhabitants in the southern Böblingen district, on the edge of the Schönbuch Nature Park — one of the largest contiguous forest areas in Baden-Württemberg. The town has a well-preserved old town center with Waldenbuch Castle (formerly ducal, now a museum of folk culture), the town church, and a characteristic row of houses along the Schloss Bach stream. During Advent, the historic town center transforms into an atmospheric Advent landscape.
Expect a quiet, atmospheric market for families and culinary enthusiasts — not mass tourism, but regular visitors from the Schönbuch region: Waldenbuch, Aichtal, Schönaich, Steinenbronn, Filderstadt, Dettenhausen. Expect the combination with the castle ensemble (worth seeing independently of the market), the opportunity to visit the Ritter Museum (separate opening hours), and Swabian Advent cuisine in its highest quality.
The City of Waldenbuch has scheduled the 2026 Christmas Market; the exact date is usually announced in late autumn (October/November). It is expected to take place on the first or second Advent weekend — early or mid-December. The format follows the proven concept: a compact market on the market square, quality-curated stalls, and chocolate specialties as a hallmark.
The 20-meter illuminated Christmas tree will be erected as usual in the first week of December and ceremonially switched on with the market's opening. Catering will be provided by local associations, and the city awards stall permits after an application process — with a clear preference for regional crafts and sustainable products.
