Dohren — A Village in the Herzlake Municipality
Dohren is a village within the municipality of Herzlake in southern Emsland. The municipality lies at the transition between Emsland and Hümmling and is characterized by a vibrant village and club culture. As in many places in the region, the Marksmen's Association plays a central role in the social life of the village. Its main festival is the traditional highlight of the year, combining customs, sporting competition, and village festival culture.
Tradition of Emsland Marksmanship
The Emsland tradition of marksmanship is rooted in medieval citizens' guilds and has evolved over the centuries into a distinct cultural tradition with firmly established customs. The royal shoot-out — the competition for the title of Marksmen's King — forms the heart of every Schützenfest. Whoever shoots down the last splinter of the wooden bird is proclaimed the King of the association and represents the marksmen's community for one year.
Three Days of Festivities in Dohren
The festival in 2026 spans three days, from Wednesday, May 13th to Friday, May 15th. It kicks off on Wednesday evening with the ceremonial mustering of the marksmen and the first evening celebration in the tent. Thursday is dedicated to the royal shoot-out and the proclamation of the new king, while Friday is dedicated to the royal dinner, the king's dance, and the festive conclusion. Catering is provided throughout in the festival tent at the Schützenplatz, and local music bands ensure the festive atmosphere.
Embedded in Herzlake's Club Culture
The municipality of Herzlake is home to several active marksmen's and traditional clubs. The Dohren Marksmen's Association maintains regular contact with friendly clubs in neighboring municipalities, and the annual Schützenfest in Dohren is traditionally attended by guests from surrounding villages as well.
