Medieval market at the Old Harbour with traders, warriors, and Nordic music
Friedrichskoog, a picturesque municipality on the North Sea coast in the Dithmarschen district, is one of the most charming destinations on the Schleswig-Holstein North Sea coast with its Old Harbour, the Seehundstation Friedrichskoog (seal sanctuary), and its typical marsh hinterland. Once a year in June, the Old Harbour opens its grounds for a historical spectacle: the Wikingertage (Viking Days). The concept: A market weekend that brings the early medieval Viking world to life with its crafts, warrior arts, music, and food in the atmospheric harbour.
Over the weekend, market stalls of historical traders will be set up on the harbour grounds – jewellery, leather goods, forged knives, woven textiles, furs, and wood carvings. In addition, warrior groups like the Wotans Wölfe will set up their camps and demonstrate shield wall tactics, archery, and axe throwing for spectators (and the brave to participate). Wool dyers will demonstrate their craft with natural dyes, glass beads will be formed before the visitors' eyes, and blacksmiths will work at the forge.
Musically, the 2026 festival is in the hands of Havets Fenor, a folk band specializing in Nordic and medieval soundscapes. Food is traditionally provided by the Bräterey stand (suckling pig, skewers, game roast over an open fire), the Teigschlacht (stick bread and medieval baked goods), the Tavern (beer and mead), and Ekkis Methandel (brewed and spiced mead). The scent of incense, the sound of drums, and the crackling of fires shape the atmosphere.
Friedrichskoog is more than just the Wikingertage: The municipality has a famous seal sanctuary with a rearing facility, an endless mudflat landscape right on its doorstep, and the typical Dithmarschen marshland in the hinterland. Visitors to the festival often combine it with a mudflat walk or a visit to the seal sanctuary – a perfect family holiday.
On June 13th and 14th, 2026, the Old Harbour of Friedrichskoog will become an early medieval Viking camp. Over the weekend, craftsmen, traders, and warriors will present the Viking Age, and the folk band Havets Fenor will provide the musical accompaniment.
Opening hours: Saturday 11:00 AM to 10:00 PM, Sunday 11:00 AM to 6:00 PM. The festival winds down more relaxed on Sundays.
