Five-day autumn Volksfest in the Bavarian Forest
The Volksfest Viechtach is in an interesting transitional phase in 2026: for the first time, it will take place in October — the traditional date (usually June/July) has been moved to stand out from the crowded summer Volksfest calendar and to set its own accent in the Lower Bavarian festival calendar. From October 8th to 12th, the festival will run for five days from Thursday to Monday — a classic Volksfest duration for an autumn Volksfest.
The organizer is Festzeltbetrieb Widmann GmbH, a family established in the festival tent and Volksfest business in the Bavarian Forest. Widmann operates Volksfests in several Lower Bavarian towns and is known for solid catering, professional band booking, and smooth organization. The festival tent offers live bands every evening, classic Volksfest beer (mostly from regional breweries), and the standard classics of Bavarian Volksfest cuisine.
The festival grounds are located directly on the Regen river on the edge of the town centre — a classic festival site with a festival tent, carousels, shooting galleries, candy stalls, and a Ferris wheel. The location on the Regen river with views of the surrounding hills of the Bavarian Forest is scenically attractive. In October, the autumn foliage is added — the beech forests around Viechtach turn golden yellow at this time.
Viechtach in the Regen district likes to call itself the Town of the Bavarian Forest. With the famous Pfahl (a geological quartz formation), the Glass Route, and the Glass Museum, the small town has more to offer than its size suggests. Viechtach has about 8,200 inhabitants — manageable, but culturally and touristically vibrant.
The Volksfest is advertised as both a festival/party and explicitly as a children's event. In the afternoons, families are the target audience — discounted rates on rides, children's program in the festival tent, often also a children's dance day with a DJ. In the evening, the Volksfest audience takes over with live bands and stein-swinging.
The 2026 edition marks a turning point for the Viechtach Volksfest: the switch from a summer to an autumn date. This relocation allows Festzeltbetrieb Widmann to position the festival distinctively in the Lower Bavarian festival calendar and to escape the direct competitive pressure of the many summer Volksfests.
The program — festival tent concerts, carousels, rides, shooting galleries — follows the classic Bavarian Volksfest format. Detailed daily programs will be published on viechtach.de/volksfest shortly before the festival begins.
