About Mondscheinmarkt Völklingen

When dusk falls over Völklingen's city center in early November, the cobblestones around St. Eligius Church transform into a flickering stage: The Mondscheinmarkt draws tens of thousands of visitors to the Saarland year after year. Over 90 traders, jugglers, fire-eaters, and musicians create a sea of lights between 4 PM and 11 PM, where regional delicacies and artisanal rarities meet historical flair.

An Evening Market with its Own Signature

The Völklinger Mondscheinmarkt is a long-established cult event in the Saarland: once a year, always on the first Friday in November, the pedestrian zone around St. Eligius Church transforms into an atmospheric evening market. Instead of midday hustle and bustle, a mix of lantern light, campfires, drumbeats, and the murmur of guests warming themselves at mulled wine and honey schnapps stands reigns here from 4 PM onwards. By 11 PM, when the last torches are extinguished, it is long dark over Völklingen — and the memory of the market lingers until the following year.

A Market with Tradition Since 2007

Initiated by the Gesellschaft für Wirtschaftsförderung und Stadtmarketing (GWIS), the Mondscheinmarkt has developed into one of the trademarks of this Saarland industrial city since its first edition in 2007. The idea was simple and ingenious: to hold a historical market after sunset, with stylistic elements from the Middle Ages, Romanticism, and rural tradition. Today, over 90 market vendors regularly register — a record number for a city of this size.

Where the Market Unfolds

The heart of the event beats on Adolph-Kolping-Platz and in the Pfarrgarten (parish garden) of the historic St. Eligius Church. From here, the market spreads into the Forbacher Passage and the adjacent pedestrian zone. The church garden, in particular, is considered a hidden gem: there, between old walls and candlelight, you'll find stalls with special goods, medieval camps, and small musical stages.

Enjoyment, Crafts, and Spectacle

The culinary offerings range from game sausage and goat cheese from the nearby Saargau to specialties from Lorraine, Iberico ham, homemade jams, smoked fish, and suckling pig. Accompanied by mulled wine, hot mead, whisky tastings, punch, and non-alcoholic creations. On the craft side, candle makers, jewelers, soap makers, glassblowers, and leather workers await with their stalls.

Entertainment is provided by the ensemble Lorraine Médiévale with minstrels, jesters, and stilt walkers, as well as jugglers from JUXART, a costumed town crier, and the famous fire show around 9:30 PM, where fire-eaters and torch dancers plunge the night into flickering orange.

Why a Visit is Worthwhile

With only one evening, the Mondscheinmarkt is one of the shortest — but also most intense — markets in the Saarbrücken district. For visitors from the rest of the Saarland, from Lorraine, or from Rhineland-Palatinate, the detour is worthwhile for the atmosphere alone. Admission is free, the city center is accessible, and the proximity to the Völklingen Ironworks UNESCO World Heritage site makes the Mondscheinmarkt an ideal start to a long weekend in Völklingen.

Mondscheinmarkt Völklingen — edition 2026

On Friday, November 6, 2026, GWIS, together with the city of Völklingen, once again invites you to the Mondscheinmarkt around St. Eligius Church. From 4 PM to 11 PM, the city center transforms into a historically influenced evening market with over 90 stalls, live music, jugglers, and the traditional fire show.

The 19th edition of the Mondscheinmarkt will again take place in its usual format in 2026: the first Friday in November, 4 PM to 11 PM, Völklingen city center. The venues are Adolph-Kolping-Platz, the parish garden of St. Eligius, the Forbacher Passage, and the adjacent pedestrian zone.

As in previous years, the Gesellschaft für Wirtschaftsförderung und Stadtmarketing (GWIS) is responsible for the organization. Over 90 market vendors have already registered — from regional honey wine to Lorraine pâté.
