Ringreiten — North Frisia's Riding Tradition

Ringreiten is one of North Frisia's most characteristic equestrian traditions. Unlike a classic horse race, it's not about speed but skill: the rider gallops down a straight track and tries to spear a small metal ring hanging above the track with a long wooden pole. A competition that connects generations and is still practiced in many North Frisian communities today.

At Viöl's Dörpsplatz

The venue for the Viöler Ringreiten is the Dörpsplatz – the central meeting and festival square of the municipality. The competitions begin at 8 a.m. and continue throughout the day. Various classes are judged: main class, ladies' class, youth class, and in some years, children's classes as well. At the end, the new king and queen are crowned.

In the District of Nordfriesland

Viöl is a municipality in the district of Nordfriesland, located between Husum and Flensburg, in the rather sparsely populated center of North Frisia. The Ringreiten is one of the main events in the municipality's annual event calendar – a day when residents, club members, and horse enthusiasts from the surrounding Schleswig region come together.
