About Usedomer Drachenfestival

The Usedomer Drachenfestival in Karlshagen transforms the Baltic Sea resort's beach into a colorful spectacle in the sky every autumn. Giant kites, handmade artist models, beach decorations, and the announced world's largest inflatable kite characterize the two festival days. Workshops, kite-building activities, live music, and the competition for the "Draki" — the Usedom kite Oscar — make the event the ultimate family event in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania's autumn calendar. Kites over the Baltic Sea

The Usedomer Drachenfestival is one of the largest and most popular kite festivals in Northern Germany. Every year on a weekend in October, kite enthusiasts, kite designers, and families come to the wide beach of the Karlshagen Baltic Sea resort to decorate the sky over the Baltic Sea with hundreds of colorful kites. The 14th edition is scheduled for 2026 — the festival has been a firm fixture in Karlshagen's event calendar since 2013.

From Mini Kites to XXL Models

The spectrum of participating kites is impressive: mini kites for children's hands to professional giant kites that require several people to hold. Handmade artist models in the shape of octopuses, kites of Chinese tradition, whale silhouettes, and abstract art kites combine in the sky to form a constantly changing composition. On the beach forecourt, beach kite sculptures and cute kite figures impress around the concert shell. A special highlight for children is the XXL slide in the shape of a kite.

Competitions and the "Draki"

The festival thrives on encounters and competition. On Saturday from 3:30 PM to 5:00 PM, the Kite Sand Sculpture Competition takes place — families create creative kite sculptures from Baltic Sea sand, which are then judged by a jury. Over both festival days, kite pilots can participate in the competition for the "Most Beautiful Kite in the Sky." The award ceremony — with the presentation of the "Draki", the Usedom kite Oscar — takes place on Sunday at 3:30 PM.

Accompanying Program and Workshops

In addition to the kite spectacle in the sky, a diverse accompanying program shapes the festival's character. Kite-building workshops for children and adults teach how to design and build a kite. Live music at the concert shell, children's entertainment with stories and games, and a small festival mile with food trucks and drink stands round off the weekend.

Karlshagen as a Kite Location

The wide, spacious beach of Karlshagen — located between Peenemünde and Trassenheide — offers ideal conditions for the kite festival. The consistent north-westerly wind, the flat sandy ground, and the lack of obstacles make it one of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania's best kite spots. Its location in the Vorpommern-Greifswald district and its immediate proximity to the Dünencamp Karlshagen ensure sufficient infrastructure. The organizer is the municipality of Ostseebad Karlshagen, which positions the festival as a community family event.

Usedomer Drachenfestival — edition 2026

The 14th edition of the Usedomer Drachenfestival will take place on October 10 and 11, 2026, on the Karlshagen beach forecourt. Giant kites, handmade models, a kite sand sculpture competition, workshops, and the competition for the "Draki" — free admission. Award ceremony on Sunday afternoon at 3:30 PM.

Saturday, October 10 — Family Kite Day

The festival kicks off on Saturday, bringing together kite pilots and families on the Karlshagen beach forecourt. Throughout the day, there will be kite-building workshops, live music at the concert shell, and children's entertainment. The highlight in the afternoon: the Kite Sand Sculpture Competition from 3:30 PM to 5:00 PM. Families create creative kite sculptures from Baltic Sea sand.

Sunday, October 11 — Finale and "Draki" Award Ceremony

On Sunday, kite pilots continue their demonstrations. Giant kites, beach sculptures, and the announced XXL kite enchant the sky over the Baltic Sea. At 3:30 PM, the award ceremony for the "Draki", the Usedom kite Oscar, takes place — awarding the "Most Beautiful Kite in the Sky.".

Beach Stage and Concert Shell

Throughout both days, live music, food trucks, and a small festival market shape the atmosphere. The wide Karlshagen beach offers ideal kite-flying conditions — consistent wind, flat sandy ground, and unobstructed views of the water.
