Lower Saxony's largest Christmas market – from the World Exhibition Square to the Market Church and Ballhof Square
The Hannover Christmas Market is one of the four weeks of the year when the city center of Lower Saxony's state capital transforms the most. From November 23rd to December 22nd, 2026, the stalls will stretch through the center, connecting modern city architecture (World Exhibition Square) with Gothic sacral architecture (Market Church) and the intimate atmosphere of the old town (Ballhof Square).
The market begins at the World Exhibition Square, the central city square in front of the main train station. From there, it leads via Grupenstraße into the city center, past the Gothic Market Church, one of Northern Germany's most important sacral buildings. It continues to the Leineufer (Leine River bank) and finally to Ballhof Square in the historic old town. Thus, the market is not a single square but a continuous festive mile through the city center.
Several hundred stalls offer:
Fairy lights, fir trees, brass band concerts in front of the Market Church, carousels at Ballhof Square, and the old town's architecture create an Advent atmosphere that makes the Hannover Christmas Market one of the most sought-after in the northern German region. On contemplatively designed mornings, the atmosphere is family-oriented; in the evenings, working people meet after work for mulled wine.
At the same time, other smaller Christmas markets take place in the city area – for example, at Wilhelmsplatz, Lister Platz, and in the district centers. The central Christmas market serves as a tourist showcase, while the district markets act as neighborhood meeting places.
As in previous years, the Christmas market is structured along its historic route. Each section of the market has a slightly different character: the World Exhibition Square as the urban entrance area, Grupenstraße as the gastronomy-focused route, the area around the Market Church as the spiritual-acoustic highlight with brass band concerts, and Ballhof Square as the family-friendly conclusion with a carousel and smaller stalls.
The exact number of stalls, the program offerings on individual days, and special promotions will be published by the organizer in the autumn of 2026.
